THE FRAME ABOVE LILY / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - The Camera Above the Door

The nursery camera had no audio.

It did not need any.

The images were enough.

Grant watched the video once.

Only once.

Rachel could not look away.

The recording began eleven minutes before she entered the room.

Vanessa walked through the door.

Brooke followed.

Vanessa looked up at the family photograph.

She pointed toward Lily's bassinet.

Brooke shook her head.

Vanessa grabbed the bassinet and rolled it directly beneath the frame.

Lily moved beneath the blanket.

Vanessa climbed onto a chair.

Removed the frame.

Stepped down.

Brooke reached for the bassinet.

Vanessa slapped her hand away.

They argued silently.

Then Vanessa turned the frame over.

She worked at the backing with her fingers.

Nothing opened.

She searched the dresser.

Found a metal instrument.

Tried again.

The backing still held.

Brooke paced near the door.

Vanessa became increasingly frustrated.

Then Rachel appeared.

The moment Rachel entered, Vanessa hid the instrument behind her leg.

Rachel remembered the conversation now.

She had asked why Lily's bassinet had been moved.

Vanessa said the overhead light bothered the baby.

Rachel stepped closer.

Vanessa picked up the frame.

The video showed what Rachel had seen from the front.

But the overhead angle made it worse.

The frame was not simply above Lily.

Vanessa adjusted her grip.

She looked down.

Then she raised it higher.

Rachel rushed forward.

The rest happened quickly.

The attempted strike.

Rachel lifting Lily.

The frame hitting the mattress.

The struggle.

Vanessa's slap.

Brooke grabbing the blanket.

Rachel shielding the baby.

Grant breaking through the door.

Then the frame opening.

The key falling.

Vanessa lunging.

There was no ambiguity.

No misunderstanding.

No version of the video in which Vanessa looked innocent.

Grant walked out of the security office when it ended.

Rachel found him alone in a stairwell.

He sat three steps down with his elbows on his knees.

She remained standing.

For a while, neither spoke.

Finally Grant said, "I brought her into Lily's life."

Rachel sat beside him.

"You also got through that door."

"After."

"You still got through it."

He looked at Rachel's bandaged cheek.

"You were there first."

"Melissa made sure of that."

Grant understood.

The trust.

The godmother appointment.

The hidden frame.

Melissa had chosen Rachel because she believed Rachel would act before asking permission.

That decision had saved Lily.

Grant looked at the concrete wall.

"Vanessa used to tell me you interfered too much."

Rachel almost smiled.

"She wasn't entirely wrong."

"She said Melissa used you to keep me attached to my old life."

"Did you believe her?"

"Sometimes."

Rachel nodded.

That hurt.

But she appreciated the truth.

Grant continued.

"I stopped calling you."

"I noticed."

"I thought I was protecting my marriage."

"You were isolating yourself."

"I know."

Rachel studied him.

"Then don't do it again."

He looked at her.

"With anyone."

They returned to Lily's floor.

Doctor Wells met them outside the room.

He had reviewed Lily's records.

The newborn was stable enough to leave intensive observation within twenty-four hours.

But something concerned him.

Her previous feeding difficulties might not have been caused only by surgery.

He had asked pharmacy technicians to review the medication pump history.

Grant's face went rigid.

"What did they find?"

"Two pauses in delivery that were not documented by nursing staff."

Rachel remembered Claire.

Vanessa near the pump.

"How long?"

"Six minutes the first time. Four the second."

"Could that hurt her?"

"Potentially, depending on timing. In Lily's case, we corrected the resulting imbalance quickly."

Grant closed his eyes.

Doctor Wells continued.

"We are reviewing every access point."

Rachel asked, "Can you prove who touched it?"

"Not from the pump."

Grant looked toward the security office.

"But maybe from the camera."

The nursery video archive covered seventy-two hours.

Danner had attempted to flag several segments for deletion.

He had not completed the process.

The hospital's IT team recovered them.

One clip showed Claire leaving the nursery.

Vanessa entered thirty seconds later.

She approached Lily.

Looked toward the doorway.

Then reached behind the medication pump.

The camera did not show her fingers clearly.

But the screen went dark for a moment.

When Claire returned, Vanessa stepped away.

Another clip showed Brooke standing outside the door as though keeping watch.

Grant did not speak when he saw it.

He simply handed the tablet back.

The evidence was no longer one dramatic act.

It was a pattern.

Naomi arrived with additional news.

A temporary family court filing had been submitted that morning.

Grant frowned.

"By whom?"

Naomi looked directly at him.

"Vanessa."

Rachel stared at her.

"From the hospital?"

"Her attorney filed it electronically."

"What does she want?"

Naomi placed the papers on the table.

Vanessa alleged that Grant was emotionally unstable after Melissa's death.

She claimed Rachel had assaulted her.

She claimed Lily had been placed in danger because Grant allowed Rachel unrestricted access.

And she requested temporary joint custodial authority over Lily until the court could evaluate the situation.

Grant almost laughed.

"After the video?"

"Her attorney may not know the video exists."

Rachel picked up the filing.

At the bottom was a supporting document.

A statement supposedly signed by Grant three months earlier.

It said he wanted Vanessa to act as Lily's co-guardian after birth.

Grant stared at his signature.

Another forgery.

But this time Naomi noticed something.

She pulled the old hospital authorization beside it.

The signatures were identical.

Not similar.

Identical.

Every line.

Every curve.

The same image had been copied onto both documents.

Rachel whispered, "That is good for us."

Naomi nodded.

"It is."

Grant looked at the date on the filing.

Then he frowned.

The forged statement had been notarized.

Naomi saw it too.

The notary seal belonged to someone named Evelyn Price.

Grant said, "I know that name."

Rachel looked at him.

"Who?"

May you like

Grant's face changed.

"She works for Vanessa's attorney."
