Chapter 28 - The Room Reserved for the DeadThe old hotel awakened around them.
Corridor lights illuminated one by one, leading from the docking chamber into the submerged building.
Elise’s voice called through the speakers.
“Follow the blue lights. Do not enter any room displaying your name.”
Mara and Adrian exchanged a glance.
Every door along the main corridor bore a brass number.
Behind the doors were preserved suites containing clothing, passports and personal histories for people declared dead.
Room 18 displayed Margaret Sutton’s name.
Room 27 displayed Elise Sutton.
Room 31 displayed Helena Vale.
Room 44 displayed Adrian Vale.
At the end of the corridor, Mara found a door labeled:
MARA ELISE SUTTON — RESERVED
A date was engraved beneath it.
Tomorrow’s date.
Adrian pulled her away.
“Elise said not to enter.”
Mara heard movement inside.
Then Eleanor’s voice.
“Mara, open the door.”
She knew it could be a recording.
She also knew Eleanor had prepared messages for nearly every possibility.
Mara inserted Crown One.
The door opened.
Inside was an exact replica of her apartment. The same furniture. The same office dress hanging beside the wardrobe. The same photographs.
On the kitchen table lay a passport bearing Mara’s image under another name.
Emily Crown.
A death certificate for Mara Sutton lay beside it.
Cause of death: drowning.
Date: tomorrow.
Daniel found financial documents transferring Mara’s professional credentials, accounts and legal authority to the new identity.
“She planned an escape for you,” he said.
“No,” Mara replied. “She planned to erase me.”
A screen activated.
Eleanor appeared.
“If you entered this room, then you ignored a warning. That is both your greatest strength and your most dangerous weakness.”
Mara moved closer.
“The registry cannot be destroyed from outside. Someone must enter as a reserved identity, assume control and close the system.”
“Why me?”
“Because Margaret’s blood grants ownership. My training gives you discipline. Elise’s absence taught you independence.”
Eleanor paused.
“And because I have already used your identity once.”
A hospital record appeared.
Mara Sutton had legally died for eleven minutes on the night of the crash.
During those eleven minutes, Eleanor activated the registry in Mara’s name.
Mara was not merely the successor.
She had technically controlled Azure Crown since childhood.
A red warning flashed across the screen.
OWNER PRESENT.
TERMINATION PROTOCOL AVAILABLE.
