Chapter 29 - Eleven Minutes DeadAdrian struck the door repeatedly while Mara searched for another exit.

The water rose past her ankles.

Eleanor’s recording continued calmly.

“To close the registry, the owner must repeat the condition under which authority was first granted.”

Mara remembered the phrase from the website.

“The sea is calm.”

Nothing happened.

The water reached her knees.

Outside, Adrian shouted her name.

Mara looked at the replica of her childhood photograph.

Authority had been granted while she was clinically dead.

Not calm.

Not alive.

“The tide remembers,” she said.

A biometric panel emerged from the wall.

It requested a heartbeat.

Mara placed her palm against it.

OWNER STATUS CONFLICT.

The system still classified Mara as both living and dead.

That contradiction was why Eleanor had chosen her.

It allowed Mara to enter every reserved identity without permanently assuming one.

The termination option appeared.

Before she could select it, another hand pressed against the glass from the opposite side.

Elise stood in the corridor.

She held Charles’s key.

“Don’t close it,” Elise mouthed.

Mara hesitated.

Elise pointed toward the documents floating in the water, then held up a note:

Closing it deletes the evidence.

The water reached Mara’s waist.

She could preserve the archive and expose the network—or close it and ensure no one ever used it again.

Then a second message appeared beneath Elise’s writing.

Margaret stood farther down the corridor.

Her note read:

The evidence has copies. End this.

One of them was lying.

Mara examined Eleanor’s screen.

Seven small symbols showed the status of the founding roles.

Blood: active.

Law: active.

Security: active.

Finance: active.

Consent: active.

Memory: active.

Medicine: absent.

Dr. Trent had not arrived.

Without the medical witness, the termination could not be completed.

Someone had locked Mara inside before the final role was present.

The room was not a test.

It was an execution disguised as a choice.

Mara used the brass key to break the water pipe, redirecting pressure toward the door controls.

The lock short-circuited.

Adrian pulled her into the corridor.

As Mara struggled to breathe, a voice spoke behind them.

“You always were difficult to certify as dead.”

Dr. Trent stood at the corridor entrance.

Blood covered his shirt.

In his hand was Crown Six.

Behind him, Patricia held a gun.

She pointed it directly at Margaret.
