Chapter 22 - The Woman Above the LightAdrian opened the lantern-room door from the outside after overriding the emergency system.

Mara climbed the spiral staircase alone.
Margaret stood facing the sea.
She was smaller than Mara expected. Her left hand trembled, but her posture resembled Eleanor’s—controlled, patient and impossible to read.
“You delivered the letter beneath my door,” Mara said.
“Yes.”
“You followed me.”
“I watched over you.”
“Those are not the same thing.”
Margaret accepted the accusation without protest.
Mara studied her scarred face.
“Why didn’t you come to me?”
“Because Eleanor trained you to believe the first wounded woman who called herself family.”
“Are you saying Elise is lying?”
“I am saying every survivor lies about the part that allowed them to survive.”
Margaret explained that a fisherman had pulled her from the burning wreck before emergency workers arrived. Eleanor found her days later and offered a choice: remain legally dead or watch Elise and Mara disappear.
“For eighteen years, I collected evidence.”
“While my mother was imprisoned?”
“I did not know where Elise was.”
“You knew where I was.”
“Yes.”
“And you did nothing.”
Margaret looked toward the waves.
“I believed distance would keep you alive.”
“That was Grandmother’s excuse too.”
The words wounded her.
Below, Helena attempted to escape through the drainage tunnel. Sofia stopped her at gunpoint.
Margaret handed Mara a small brass key.
“The final registry is not beneath the lighthouse. Eleanor moved it after the crash.”
“Where?”
“To the one property no Sutton could legally enter.”
“Which property?”
“The Azure Crown.”
Mara frowned.
“We’re already there.”
“The resort you see is leased land. The true Azure Crown lies beneath the bay.”
Margaret pointed toward the dark water. Far beyond the cliffs, three lights formed a triangle.
“The original hotel was built offshore. It was sealed after a storm forty-two years ago.”
“What is inside?”
“The unedited registry.”
Margaret placed the key in Mara’s palm.
“And evidence identifying everyone who paid Eleanor to remain dead.”
A gunshot echoed below.
Mara turned toward the staircase.
When she looked back, Margaret had opened an exterior maintenance door.
Wind rushed into the lantern room.
“Stop!”
Margaret stepped onto the narrow platform.
A helicopter rose from beneath the cliff.
Someone inside extended a hand toward her.
Before boarding, Margaret called back:

“Ask Adrian what name appeared on his first birth certificate.”
Then she disappeared into the night.
