Chapter 20 - The Second EliseThey reached the lighthouse shortly before midnight.

The outer door stood open.
Inside, wet footprints circled the spiral staircase. They belonged to two different people.
One set climbed upward.
The other descended beneath the floor.
Adrian followed the upper footprints with Sofia while Mara, Patricia and Elise searched below.
The underground level contained a circular archive room. Blue lights glowed beneath glass panels in the floor.
At the center stood the woman from the restaurant.
She no longer wore the cream coat.
Her dark hair had been removed, revealing a fitted gray wig beneath it. Part of the skin along her jaw had peeled away.
Adrian’s supposedly dead mother looked through Elise Sutton’s face.
“Helena,” Elise said.
The woman smiled.
“That name always sounded better when you said it.”
Mara moved between them.
“Why did you bring me here?”
“To correct Eleanor’s final mistake.”
Helena touched a panel. The glass floor illuminated, revealing hundreds of names arranged like branches of a family tree.
One branch belonged to Margaret Sutton.
Another belonged to Eleanor.
A third carried no surname.
At its end was Adrian Vale.
“Elise is Margaret’s daughter,” Helena said. “You are Margaret’s granddaughter. That makes you the rightful controller of the founding trust.”
“Then why impersonate her?”
“Because the successor must voluntarily authorize the transfer. Eleanor knew you would refuse if you understood what the trust truly owns.”
“What does it own?”
“Not the resort.”
Helena’s smile faded.
“The resort owns the trust.”
She explained that Azure Crown was merely the visible center of a global network of private properties. Each location preserved records capable of exposing powerful families.
“The person controlling the registry can reveal those records—or erase them.”
Mara looked at Elise.
“Is she telling the truth?”
“Partly.”
“Which part is false?”
Elise’s eyes remained fixed on Helena.
“She didn’t create the impersonation to control the trust.”
“Then why?”
“To enter the registry as me and erase her own name.”
Helena’s expression changed.
For the first time, she appeared afraid.
A bell sounded above them.
Adrian called through the radio.
“Mara, someone is inside the lantern room.”
Helena turned toward the staircase.
“That’s impossible.”
The archive screens flickered.
A new reservation appeared.
Guest: Eleanor Sutton

Then Eleanor’s voice filled the lighthouse.
“If you are hearing this, Helena has finally returned home.”
