Chapter 21 - Eleanor’s Final LieEvery door in the lighthouse locked automatically.

Eleanor’s recorded voice continued.

“I told each of you a different version of the truth because none of you could be trusted with all of it.”

Elise closed her eyes.

Helena looked up at the speakers with hatred.

Mara remained still.

Eleanor described the original Azure Crown registry. Margaret Sutton had inherited control from their father. Eleanor served as financial administrator, while Helena worked as Margaret’s private security officer.

Eighteen years earlier, Margaret discovered that identities stored in the registry were being sold.

“She intended to expose us,” Helena said.

“Us?” Mara asked.

Helena did not answer.

Eleanor’s recording continued.

“The night of the crash, three women entered the coastal road. Only two were supposed to return.”

The archive displayed traffic photographs.

Margaret drove the car.

Elise sat beside her.

Eleanor followed in another vehicle.

Helena rode with Eleanor.

Charles had damaged Margaret’s brakes, believing Elise would be driving. Helena then forced Margaret’s vehicle off the road.

“Grandmother helped her?” Mara whispered.

Elise began crying.

Eleanor admitted helping remove Margaret from the wreck—but not to save her.

Margaret had survived the initial impact.

Eleanor took Margaret’s founding-member card and left her beside the vehicle while she carried Elise away.

By the time emergency workers arrived, the car had burned.

Margaret’s body was identified as Elise’s.

“Eleanor stole my mother’s identity from the dead,” Elise said.

“No,” Helena replied. “She stole her authority.”

Mara understood.

Eleanor had raised Elise as her daughter years earlier to conceal Margaret’s bloodline. After Margaret died, she used Elise’s presumed death to remove the last competing heir.

“Why keep my mother alive?” Mara asked.

“Because biometric systems could change,” Helena said. “Eleanor never destroyed a key she might need later.”

The recording reached its final section.

“There is one truth Helena does not know. Margaret did not die beside the car.”

Helena’s face drained of color.

A camera feed appeared.

The lighthouse lantern room.

An elderly woman stood beside the great glass lens.

Half her face bore deep burn scars.

She held a dark blue pen.

Mara stopped breathing.

The woman looked directly into the camera.

“My name is Margaret Sutton,” she said.

“And Eleanor reserved my grave before I was dead.”
