Chapter 6 - The Brother Beneath the Bell

For seven years, Gabriel Vale had imagined his brother dead in a hundred different ways.

He had pictured Samuel beneath the river, buried in concrete, burned in an unmarked furnace, or abandoned in a foreign prison under a false name. He had paid divers, detectives, corrupt officials, honest officials, and men whose only skill was making other men talk. Every trail ended in blood, silence, or a body that did not belong to Samuel.

He had never imagined finding him beneath a church bell.

Samuel looked older than Gabriel by twenty years, though only four separated them. His beard had grown gray and uneven. The skin around his wrists was scarred from repeated restraints. Yet his eyes were the same restless blue eyes that had once laughed during dangerous plans and challenged Gabriel whenever obedience became easier than conscience.

"Samuel," Gabriel said.

The name barely left his mouth.

Father Corvin recovered first. He lunged for the token, but Rafe drove him against the railing. The second captor dragged Elena backward, pressing the pistol beneath her jaw.

"No one moves," the woman said.

Her voice made Samuel lift his head sharply.

"Diana?"

The captor froze.

Elena used the moment. She stamped on Diana's foot, twisted, and threw her weight toward the bell rope. The gun fired into the ceiling. Gabriel crossed the platform in three strides, caught Elena, and pulled her behind the iron support.

Rafe struck Corvin's wrist until the remote trigger clattered away. David lay moaning near the stairs, blood soaking his sleeve.

Then the bell rang again.

The vibration shook dust from the beams. A mechanism inside the vault began to turn. Samuel's chains tightened, drawing him toward the rear wall.

"Key!" he shouted. "The crest opens the lock."

Gabriel saw the Porsche key near Corvin's shoe. Corvin kicked it through the gap in the platform.

It fell into the darkness below.

Samuel's chain dragged him backward.

Gabriel dropped into the vault and grabbed the chain with both hands. Metal cut into his palms. Rafe joined him, bracing his boots against the floor.

"Mara," Gabriel said into his radio, "stop the mechanism."

Static answered.

Deep below, Lily heard the bell and followed a side passage toward its sound. She reached a junction where old painted arrows had faded from the walls. One pointed toward DORMITORY. Another toward LAUNDRY. A third bore the thorned bell symbol.

At her feet, something silver struck the stone and spun in a circle.

The Porsche key.

She picked it up.

Voices echoed above through a ventilation shaft.

"The key opens the lock."

Lily ran toward the bell symbol.

On the platform, Elena crawled to David. He recoiled, expecting revenge.

Instead she tore fabric from his shirt and pressed it against his wound.

"Why are you helping him?" Gabriel demanded.

"Because Lily should not watch me become like them."

Corvin laughed while Rafe held him down. "Still pretending you are innocent, Elena? Tell Gabriel what you did after Samuel rescued you. Tell him who identified the other girls."

Elena's face drained.

Samuel shouted from the vault, "Do not listen to him."

"She chose who would be transferred," Corvin continued. "She pointed to the weak ones. She helped us keep order."

"I was seventeen," Elena said. "You put a gun against Lily's father's head."

Lily heard the words through the shaft and stopped.

Her father.

Elena had always said Lily's father died before she was born. She never gave a name. She never kept a photograph.

Corvin twisted beneath Rafe's knee. "And now the child finally learns she was born from a bargain."

Gabriel looked toward Elena. "Who was her father?"

Before she could answer, the vault mechanism jerked. Samuel cried out as the chain pulled him against the wall.

A small hand appeared through an opening beside the mechanism.

Lily pushed the Porsche key into a hidden lock.

The gears stopped.

Everyone stared.

She emerged from the maintenance hatch, covered in dust, clutching the key.

"Lily!" Elena screamed.

The little girl ran into her mother's arms. Elena held her so tightly that both of them shook.

Gabriel unlocked Samuel's cuffs. Rafe dragged Corvin away from the edge. Diana dropped her weapon after three of Vale's men reached the platform from the basement stair.

For one breath, it seemed the worst was over.

Then Samuel saw Lily.

He went completely still.

He looked at her eyes, her chin, and the small crescent-shaped birthmark beside her left ear.

"Elena," he whispered. "You told me the baby didn't survive."

Elena closed her eyes.

Lily pulled back from her embrace.

"Mom?"

May you like

Samuel gripped the edge of the vault.

"That child is mine."
