Chapter 5 - The Man David Thought Was His Partner

The shot struck the stone beside David's foot.
He stumbled and fell hard, clawing at the wet ground.
"You were told to stay useful," the masked man said.
David stared up at him. "I did everything you asked. I kept Elena quiet. I moved the payroll money. I bought the car so Vale would notice me."
Mr. Vale's expression sharpened.
"You wanted me to notice the Porsche?"
David realized what he had admitted.
The masked man stepped backward toward the tower. "Bring the token. Leave Mercer."
"Who are you?" Mr. Vale asked.
The man tilted his head. "Someone your brother trusted more than he trusted you."
Inside the surveillance van, Mara went still.
"Gabriel, pull back," she said through the radio. "This is designed around your history."
Mr. Vale did not move.
Below the tower, his teams entered the tunnel marked on the hidden map. The passage was narrow and half flooded. Their helmet cameras showed rusted pipes, chains fixed to walls, and doors sealed with newer electronic locks.
Lily watched, hugging her knees.
The first team reached a chamber beneath the tower. Two heat signatures waited behind a steel door. Rafe's second-in-command cut the power, then forced the lock.
Inside were two women wearing Mercer Hospitality uniforms.
Neither was Elena.
One woman was unconscious. The other clutched a ledger to her chest and kept repeating, "He said the bell would ring when the debt was paid."
Mara leaned toward the microphone. "Ask who said it."
The woman looked directly into the helmet camera.
"Samuel Vale."
Mr. Vale heard her through his earpiece.
For the first time, he took one step backward.
The masked man laughed softly. "Now you understand."
"Samuel is dead," Mr. Vale said.
"Is he?"
The bell above them moved.
One deep note rolled across the ruins.
Lily flinched. Birds erupted from the trees. The tower window went dark, and Elena disappeared from view.
The masked man retreated inside. Mr. Vale ran after him.
Rafe grabbed David by the collar and dragged him along.
In the van, Mara issued rapid commands. "Team one, climb from the basement. Team two, seal the tunnel exit. Keep the girl with me."
Lily heard the emphasis and knew Mara expected her to disobey.
She did not plan to disappoint her.
She waited until Mara turned to the radio console. Then she slipped through the side door and ran into the woods.
The hidden tunnel entrance was marked by a dead tree split by lightning. Lily found it because her mother had once drawn the same tree in the margins of a grocery list. At the time, Lily thought it was a picture. Now she understood it had been a memory.
The opening smelled of wet stone. She climbed down a rusted ladder and followed the distant voices of Mr. Vale's men.
Above her, inside the tower, David screamed.
The masked man had led them into a round chamber beneath the bell. Elena's chair stood empty. A recording device on the floor played her breathing through a speaker.
"It was a trick," Rafe said.
Mr. Vale looked toward a narrow staircase. "No. She was here minutes ago."
A trail of blood led upward.
They followed it to the bell platform.
Wind tore through broken windows. The massive bronze bell hung over a shaft that descended into darkness. Elena stood on the far side, her wrists tied. A second masked figure held her beside the open edge.
The first masked man removed his face covering.
He was in his late fifties, with pale eyes and a burn scar running from his chin to his collar.
Mr. Vale recognized him.
"Father Corvin."
The former director of Saint Orison Children's Home smiled.
"You remember the man you paid to bury your brother's scandal."
Mr. Vale's voice hardened. "I paid you to close the home and release the children."
"You paid me to make a problem disappear. Samuel understood the difference."
Elena looked at Mr. Vale. "He is lying about Samuel."
Corvin struck her across the mouth.
Rafe moved, but the second captor pressed the gun harder against Elena's ribs.
"The token," Corvin said.
Mr. Vale held it up.
"And the key."
He placed both on the floor and pushed them forward.
David, forgotten near the stairs, watched the objects slide past him. His greed overcame his fear. He lunged, seized the Porsche key, and ran toward Corvin.
"We had a deal!"
Corvin shot him in the shoulder.
David crashed against the bell rope.
The bell swung.
A hidden latch beneath the platform released with a thunderous click.
The floor split open.
Corvin stared down in shock.
He had not known what the key would unlock.
Beneath the bell was a steel vault.
And inside the vault, lit by a single red emergency lamp, sat a man with silver at his temples and chains around his wrists.

He looked up at Gabriel Vale.
"You took your time, brother."
