Chapter 13 - The Father Behind the Foundation

The first explosion struck the outer fence.

Haven Ridge shook. Ceiling dust fell across the table, and the emergency lights died. In darkness, guards shouted conflicting orders.

Gabriel pulled Lily and Elena beneath the table. Samuel overturned a chair for cover. Rafe broke free of the doctor and drove him into the wall.

Tomas remained standing.

A second blast opened the vehicle gate.

Through the glass ceiling, headlights appeared in the snow. Three armored trucks entered the grounds.

"Edmund does not negotiate," June said. "He erases."

"You helped him for twenty years," Rosa replied.

"I believed I was containing him."

"You built him a cleaner cage with the door open."

Tomas moved to the filing cabinets and pulled a red lever. Steel shutters sealed the chamber.

"These walls can hold for seven minutes," he said.

Gabriel checked the doors. "Mara?"

"Two teams approaching from the south," she answered. "Local police have been diverted by a false chemical spill. Federal response is twelve minutes away."

"We have seven."

"Then stop counting and find another door."

Lily remembered the tunnel map inside token 317. Saint Orison had hidden routes. Haven Ridge, built by the same foundation, might repeat the design.

She studied the circular room. Twenty-four drawers. One for each square. Behind square seventeen, the cabinet sat slightly farther from the wall.

"There," she said.

Rafe and Gabriel pulled the cabinet aside. A narrow passage descended beneath the floor.

Tomas hesitated. "That route leads to the archive vault. Edmund knows it."

"Then he expects adults," Lily replied. "He won't expect me."

Elena grabbed her shoulders. "You are not going alone."

The outer shutters buckled under gunfire.

They entered the passage in single file: Rafe first, then Rosa, Lily, Elena, Samuel, June, David, Gabriel, and Tomas. David protested until June pushed his wheelchair toward the stairs and told him to crawl or remain.

He crawled.

The archive vault smelled of paper and cold metal. Shelves held decades of records. At the far end, an underground loading door stood open.

Edmund Mercer waited beside it.

He was seventy-eight, broad-shouldered despite his age, wearing a cream overcoat untouched by snow. Four armed men surrounded him. In one hand he held a pistol. In the other, he held a young boy by the collar.

The boy was perhaps eleven.

A device blinked against his chest.

"Twenty-four signals," Edmund said. "Did you think they represented only witnesses? Some represent leverage."

Tomas's face changed. "Let him go."

"Your son has your memory," Edmund replied. "That makes him valuable."

Lily looked at Tomas. He had hidden a child just as Elena had hidden her.

Edmund smiled at June. "You always complicated simple business."

"You always called cruelty simple."

"Cruelty is inefficient. Fear is efficient. Debt is efficient. Family is the most efficient structure ever invented because people volunteer their weaknesses."

David struggled to his feet against a shelf. "Father."

Edmund barely glanced at him. "You bought a car you did not understand and stole wages too small to matter. You were given every advantage and became a restaurant thief."

David's face twisted with years of humiliation. "I did what June told me."

"That has always been your excuse."

Edmund looked at Lily.

"The Carter child. Nine years old and already the legal owner of seventeen million dollars. Samuel's sentiment created a useful instrument."

"It is not mine," Lily said.

"Everything belongs to whoever can hold it."

"That's what David thought about dinner."

Edmund laughed. "And yet here he is, hungry."

Gabriel stepped forward. "Release the boy. Take me."

"Your value is public. His is private. Private value is easier to control."

Tomas moved one step closer. A guard aimed at him.

"I gave you the codes," Tomas said. "I built your accounts."

"You also copied them."

"Because I knew you would never stop."

Edmund pressed the gun against the boy's head. "Then stop me now. Destroy the ledger. Transfer the Carter trust to the account on this page. Order your people to erase the evidence."

He slid a document across the floor.

Tomas stared at it.

Lily saw the same trapped expression her mother must have worn at seventeen. Choose the names or lose Tomas. Destroy the evidence or lose the boy.

Bad men repeated old choices because they expected fear to produce the same answer.

Lily quietly removed the tracking device from her shoe.

She rolled it beneath a shelf toward an emergency sprinkler valve.

Mara, watching the signal, understood.

The building's fire suppression system activated.

Water exploded from the ceiling. Lights flashed. Edmund's guards looked up.

Rafe fired first.

Chaos filled the vault.

Elena pulled Lily behind a shelf. Gabriel struck one guard. Rosa dragged the boy away from Edmund. Tomas seized the ledger.

David saw his father stumble.

He also saw Edmund's pistol fall within reach.

For one second, David could have picked it up and protected the others.

Instead he aimed it at June.

"You ruined my life," he said.

June looked at him through the rain of sprinklers.

"No, David. I merely kept rescuing you from the consequences."

May you like

A gunshot cracked through the vault.

June fell.
