Chapter 23 - The Other Carter Subject Had Gabriel’s NameGabriel and Mara broke through the steel door using charges placed along the hinges.

The gas had already stopped.

They found the mirror room empty except for an old tape recorder.

A man’s voice played from the speaker.

“Gabriel Vale. Memory retention confirmed.”

Gabriel went still.

Mara looked at him. “Vale?”

“My mother’s maiden name.”

He had believed his mother came from another country and died when he was six. His father rarely spoke of her.

Samuel’s expression revealed recognition.

“You knew,” Gabriel said.

“I suspected.”

Years earlier, Samuel had seen Gabriel’s mother at a Saint Orison property. She was employed as a translator and nurse. She helped children escape through freight routes.

Her real name was Marian Vale.

Lucy and Elena’s aunt.

That made Gabriel their cousin.

It also made him part of the Carter bloodline.

The tape continued.

A child’s voice recited security procedures, door sequences, and emergency routes.

Gabriel recognized the voice as his own.

His father had not simply inherited a criminal empire.

He had adopted a child trained to memorize its architecture.

Gabriel pressed both hands against the table.

Every instinct he believed came from experience—counting exits, noticing cameras, remembering voices—might have been conditioned inside the First House.

Mara stopped the tape.

“What matters is what you choose to do with it.”

A panel opened in the wall.

Inside lay a brass token marked 319.

Beneath it was a current photograph of Gabriel sleeping in his apartment.

The other Carter subject had been inside his home.

Tomas found a transmission device behind the panel. It was connected to Belladonna’s emergency channel.

A voice came through.

Rosa.

“They are here.”

Gunfire followed.

The line went dead.

Gabriel turned toward the exit.

Bernadette had drawn them to Ashcombe to leave Belladonna exposed.

Rosa, Nico, Tomas’s copied archives, and the worker testimony were all inside.

Gabriel ordered half the team back to the city.

Mara refused to leave Lily.

Samuel went with the returning convoy.

Before he departed, he placed a hand on Gabriel’s shoulder.

“Your memories may have been trained. Your decisions were not.”

From the corridor came the faint ring of a silver bell.

Gabriel picked up token 319.

A memory opened.

A white room.

A little girl singing.

May you like

And Bernadette telling him:

“When the final door closes, Gabriel will lock it.”
