Chapter 25 - Aaron Was the Child Who Had Taken Lily’s PhotographAaron had worked at Belladonna for eight months.

No one knew where he lived.

His employment documents were perfect.

Too perfect.

Mara searched the Saint Orison photographs and found an infant record marked SUBJECT 319.

The child’s listed gender had been altered twice.

No name.

The current image-matching system returned two possible identities.

Aaron.

And Gabriel.

They were not related by appearance.

They were related by training.

Subject 319 was not one child.

It was a role passed from one operative to another: the Keeper.

The Keeper watched Carter subjects, recorded changes, and retrieved tokens when a subject became unstable.

Aaron had taken the photograph in Belladonna.

He had entered through a corridor he knew from working there.

He had also placed the hospital bracelet inside Lily’s coat.

“He wanted us to doubt Elena,” Lily said.

“He wanted you emotionally vulnerable,” Lucy replied.

They met in the child wing after Elena freed her. Lillian remained close to Lily, refusing to release her hand.

Beatrice was missing.

Only a streak of blood led from the operating theater to a service lift.

Bernadette’s voice echoed through the building.

“Carter subjects, report to the chapel.”

The silver bell rang.

Gabriel collapsed to one knee.

A command sequence activated inside his memory.

Close the doors.

Secure the archive.

Eliminate unauthorized witnesses.

His hand moved toward his weapon.

Mara stepped in front of him.

“Gabriel.”

He looked through her rather than at her.

Lily began the lullaby.

Lucy joined.

Elena added the harmony their mother had taught them before the fire.

The command weakened.

Then Lillian sang a fourth part no one recognized.

Gabriel’s hand fell away from the weapon.

The chapel doors unlocked.

Inside, Bernadette stood before rows of empty chairs. Each chair carried the name of a stolen child.

Aaron stood beside her.

Beatrice knelt at the altar, alive but restrained.

Bernadette held a detonator.

“You came to recover your histories,” she said. “But history is only useful when someone controls the ending.”

Aaron placed a silver bell around Beatrice’s neck.

Then he removed his face.

The mask peeled away, revealing an older man with burn scars.

Father Ansel.

Elena stared in disbelief.

The priest smiled.

“I told you Beatrice started the fire.”

May you like

He looked toward Bernadette.

“I never told you who ordered me to lock the doors.”
