Chapter 29 - The Missing Directory Contained Forty-Seven Living ChildrenThe survivors returned to Belladonna under federal protection.

News of the House System spread within hours.
Arrests began before dawn.
A judge disappeared from his home.
Two police chiefs resigned.
Three private clinics burned their records rooms.
But the copied archive had already named them.
For the first time, the network was reacting rather than controlling.
The missing directory remained the greatest danger.
Without it, forty-seven children—perhaps more—could still be living under false identities or inside hidden facilities.
Beatrice survived surgery.
Lucy slept for nearly a day.
Lillian refused to enter any room unless Lily checked the exits first.
Elena stayed beside both girls.
She did not call Lillian her daughter.
She did not deny it either.
Mara reconstructed the final transmission logs. The missing directory had not been destroyed.
Someone had downloaded it eleven minutes before the explosion.
The user identification read KEEPER 319.
Ansel.
His body had not been recovered.
Gabriel remembered the passage beneath the altar and realized it contained a second branch near the archive chamber.
Ansel might have escaped before the containment door sealed.
At Belladonna, a worker found a silver bell inside the restitution display.
Attached was a flash drive.
The drive held a video recorded after the First House explosion.
Ansel sat in a moving vehicle.
“The House System was never Bernadette’s greatest achievement,” he said. “It was her failure.”
Behind him, several children slept beneath blankets.
“The active Carter children do not need cages. They live in ordinary homes. Some are loved. Some are powerful. None know what they carry.”
He held up the missing directory.
“If the archive becomes public, every government will hunt them.”
Lily leaned closer to the screen.
Ansel continued.
“Meet me where the first Carter record was sold. Come alone, Lily, and I will give you their names.”
A location appeared.
Saint Orison.
The original institution had been closed and placed under federal control.
Ansel had chosen the one place investigators believed secure.
The video ended with an image of a young boy asleep against a car window.
A brass token hung from his neck.
Lily turned toward Mara.
“I am going.”
Gabriel answered before Mara could.
“Not alone.”
Lily looked at him.
“The message specifically says—”
May you like
“I know what it says.”
This time, when Gabriel locked Belladonna’s doors behind them, he handed Elena the key.
