Chapter 12 - The Boy Who Was Never Dead

David ordered the guards to leave.

Half obeyed him.

The other half looked to June.

For several seconds, Haven Ridge balanced between two Mercers, each discovering how much loyalty the other had purchased in secret.

Then the building's emergency lights flashed red.

David raised the black device. "Anyone fires, every file is transmitted to a list of reporters, prosecutors, criminals, and families. Some people will be exposed. Others will be hunted. Rosa will not survive the week."

"You do not have the master encryption," June said.

"Father gave it to me."

June's face went still.

Their father, Edmund Mercer, had died six years earlier in a boating accident. His body was never recovered.

David saw everyone understand at once.

"He is alive," Gabriel said.

"He prefers retired," David replied.

Rosa whispered, "Edmund was the first buyer on the list."

David flinched, and Lily saw that even he had not known everything.

"What did he buy?" she asked.

Rosa looked at Elena. "Tomas."

The room became silent.

Elena gripped the table to remain standing. "No. Tomas died at Saint Orison. Corvin showed me his shirt covered in blood."

"Corvin showed you a shirt," Rosa said. "Edmund took the boy because Tomas had a gift for numbers. He could memorize ledgers after seeing them once."

Samuel understood. "The master list was not only in Rosa's memory."

"Tomas knew the financial routes. Rosa knew the names. Together they were the complete ledger."

David's confidence faltered. "My father never mentioned a boy."

June sat slowly. "He mentioned an accountant who never appeared in photographs."

Lily looked between them. "Where is Tomas now?"

A speaker above the door crackled.

A man's voice answered.

"Closer than they think."

All eyes lifted.

The glass ceiling darkened as snow slid across it. A section of the filing cabinets moved aside, revealing a narrow observation room.

A man stepped forward behind the glass.

He was in his thirties, thin and neatly dressed, with a white scar at his temple. Around his wrist was a faded thread bracelet Elena recognized immediately.

She had made it for Tomas from laundry string when they were children.

"Tomas," she breathed.

He looked at her without warmth.

"You chose three names. Mine was the fourth payment."

Elena shook her head. "I never chose you."

"Corvin said you did."

"Corvin lied."

"Everyone says that when the dead return."

The observation-room door opened, and Tomas entered carrying no weapon. He did not need one. The guards lowered theirs as he passed.

David stared. "You work for my father."

"I worked for survival. Your father mistook that for loyalty."

Tomas placed a paper ledger on the table.

It was ordinary, bound in cracked brown leather.

Samuel almost laughed. "After all the storage keys."

"The keys proved the crimes," Tomas said. "This proves who profited."

He opened to a page marked with a black ribbon. Columns of names and numbers filled the paper. Beside Gabriel Vale's family company were payments dating back thirty years.

Gabriel did not deny them.

"My father ran those routes," he said.

"And you inherited them," Tomas replied.

"I ended the human cargo when I took control."

"You kept the money built before you developed a conscience."

Lily thought of David's Porsche, bought with stolen dinners. A larger version of the same truth stood before Gabriel. Ending a crime did not automatically cleanse what the crime had purchased.

"What do you want?" she asked Tomas.

He looked at her for the first time.

"A decision no adult here can make without protecting himself."

He turned the ledger toward Lily.

"The Carter trust contains only a fraction of what was stolen. Gabriel's empire contains another part. The Mercer foundations contain more. The city itself was built by businesses that used Saint Orison labor. You can expose all of it tonight."

"And the people wearing the devices?"

"I control the real network. David controls a copy June allowed him to steal."

David raised the black device and pressed its button.

Nothing happened.

Tomas took it from his hand.

"You were always a useful distraction."

David's face collapsed.

June looked almost proud. "You learned from Edmund."

"I learned what never to become."

Tomas slid a second folder toward Elena.

Inside was a recent photograph of Edmund Mercer standing beside a private aircraft.

On the back was tomorrow's date and a location.

"Edmund is leaving the country at dawn," Tomas said. "He has the only living witnesses who can identify the current buyers."

Gabriel stood. "Where?"

"A private airfield called North Crown."

Mara's voice suddenly came through Gabriel's earpiece. The signal was faint but clear.

"Gabriel, do not move. North Crown is empty. We found the flight plan. Edmund is not leaving the country."

A pause followed.

"He is coming to Haven Ridge."
