Chapter 33 - Samuel Admitted He Had Helped Build the House SystemSamuel had not been kidnapped from Belladonna.

He had left willingly.
Security footage showed him entering a car outside the restaurant hours earlier.
Bernadette had sent him a message containing the name of his daughter.
A daughter everyone believed had died thirty years ago.
Samuel confessed through the live transmission.
As a young accountant, he created the financial channels that allowed Saint Orison to purchase children without attracting attention. He told himself he did not know what the payments meant.
Then he learned.
Instead of reporting the network, he altered ledgers and hid money, hoping to protect individual children.
His silence allowed the system to grow.
“My daughter discovered what I had done,” Samuel said. “She tried to expose it.”
Bernadette took her.
Samuel spent decades believing she was dead.
The active-child directory listed her under a new identity.
She was alive.
Bernadette promised to reveal the name if Samuel delivered himself.
“It was never about you,” Lily told Bernadette. “You wanted the directory brought close enough to steal.”
Bernadette smiled from the hospital bed.
Her room was not in a hospital.
Mara identified the wallpaper as belonging to a private medical suite aboard a cargo ship.
Tomas traced the broadcast to the harbor.
Gabriel mobilized his remaining loyalists and federal teams.
Lily copied the directory onto three encrypted drives. One went to Mara. One remained with Tomas. The third appeared to be placed in Lily’s pocket.
The drive was a decoy.
At the harbor, they found the ship preparing to depart.
Bernadette’s guards opened fire.
Gabriel’s men returned it while Mara led Lily and Elena through the lower cargo deck.
They found rooms containing files, medication, and false identity documents.
Samuel was tied to a chair in the medical suite.
Bernadette stood behind him, no longer pretending to be weak.
“Give me the directory.”
Lily placed the decoy drive on the table.
Bernadette released Samuel and inserted it into her computer.
The screen displayed one sentence.
THE CHILDREN ARE NOT YOUR PROPERTY.
The ship’s identity systems began broadcasting every hidden route, account, and passenger record to law enforcement.
Tomas had embedded the message inside the drive.
Bernadette reached for her weapon.
Samuel struck her with his cane.
The gun slid across the floor.
Elena picked it up.
Bernadette laughed.
“You could not shoot Beatrice.”
“That was because she wanted to save children.”
May you like
Elena aimed steadily.
“You never did.”
