Chapter 7 - The Gate Closed
Jack’s first reaction was not shame.
It was anger.
He abandoned the luggage and hurried toward the escalator, but two security officers stepped in front of him.
“That’s my wife,” he said. “I need to speak with her.”
One officer asked him to remain near the gate while airline staff verified the children’s travel documents.
Helen pointed toward Megan.
“She approved this trip!”
“No, she didn’t,” Sophie said.
Everyone turned toward the child.
Sophie lifted her tablet.
“I asked Mom. She said she didn’t know.”
Helen’s face collapsed.
Jack tried to take the tablet, but Ethan stepped between them.
“Don’t,” Ethan said.
Megan descended the escalator slowly.
She had imagined this confrontation many times. In those fantasies, she screamed at Jack or slapped him or demanded to know why she had not been enough.
Standing before him now, she understood that none of those questions mattered.
Jack had not betrayed her because she lacked something.
He had betrayed her because he believed love made her easy to exploit.
“What did you do?” he asked.
“I stopped you.”
“This is a misunderstanding.”
“You told me you were performing emergency surgery while standing ten feet away from me.”
Olivia moved back.
Jack looked toward her desperately.
“Megan has been spying on me. She’s unstable.”
Megan handed an officer the travel documents Gerald had sent to her phone.
“I am the children’s mother. I did not authorize international travel.”
The officer confirmed that the children could not board.
Helen began crying.
“We were bringing them back!”
“When?” Megan asked. “Jack’s return ticket is flexible. Olivia doesn’t have one.”
Olivia stared at Jack.
“You said we were all returning in ten days.”
Jack lowered his voice.
“We’ll discuss it privately.”
“No,” Olivia said. “You said Megan agreed to a separation.”
Megan looked at her.
“He told me there was nothing between you.”
Olivia’s face turned pale.
For the first time, Megan wondered how many lies Jack had told the other woman. Olivia had participated in suspicious contracts and accepted expensive trips, but she might not have known the entire plan.
Jack’s phone rang repeatedly.
The hospital CEO.
The chair of the medical board.
The bank’s fraud department.
Then Gerald called Megan.
“The authorities have accepted the preliminary evidence. Investigators are on their way. Do not allow Jack access to any device containing foundation information.”
Jack heard him.
“You reported me?”
“I reported the evidence.”
“I’m your husband.”
“You used my signature to steal from children.”
His expression shifted. The anger disappeared, replaced by fear.
“Megan, listen to me. The transfers were temporary. I was building an international treatment program.”
“In a condominium registered to Olivia’s company?”
Olivia looked at him sharply.
Jack had no answer.
Two investigators arrived before boarding ended. They did not arrest him immediately, but they seized his hospital laptop and informed him that he was required to remain available for questioning.
The gate agent removed the group’s luggage from the flight.
Around them, strangers pretended not to watch.
Megan knelt beside the children.
“You’re coming home with me.”
“Are you mad at us?” Ethan asked.
“Never.”
Sophie began crying.
“Dad said you didn’t want to go.”
Megan held both children.

Behind them, Jack’s flight departed without him.
