Chapter 23 - Gate D16
Megan did not chase Marcus.
She called Gerald.
Gerald called federal investigators.
Within minutes, airport security flagged Marcus’s passport.
Megan remained where she was.
She had learned the difference between courage and recklessness.
Marcus appeared at Gate D16 forty minutes later.
He wore a baseball cap and carried only a small suitcase.
He reached the boarding line.
Then two agents approached.
Passengers turned.
Marcus protested loudly.
He insisted he was an innocent businessman traveling for work.
An agent asked him to step aside.
He refused.
Then he saw Megan across the concourse.
For the first time, his expression changed.
He understood.
Megan walked closer but stopped several yards away.
“You did this,” Marcus said.
“No.”
She looked at the agents holding the warrant.
“Your records did.”
The words felt familiar without needing to repeat anything from the past.
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You think Jack was your only mistake? Richard made the same mistake. He believed rules mattered.”
“My father found you.”
“And then he died.”
“From a stroke.”
Marcus seemed disappointed that the suggestion no longer frightened her.
“You built your entire life around a man’s money.”
Megan smiled slightly.
“You clearly never understood whose money it was.”
Agents escorted him away.
His flight departed without him.
Megan did not watch the plane leave.
She called home.
Ethan answered.
“Did they get him?”
“Yes.”
Sophie shouted somewhere behind him.
“Ask Mom if she’s coming home!”
Megan laughed.
“I’m coming home.”
That was the difference.
Nobody was escaping.
Nobody was disappearing into a new life.
Nobody had stolen her children.
