Chapter 15 - The Box

The safe-deposit box contained no money.

It contained evidence.

Old invoices.

Internal emails.

Printed access logs.

Copies of vendor registrations.

And a flash drive wrapped inside a handwritten note.

For Richard, if I lose my job.

Naomi spent two days authenticating the files.

Then she found the pattern.

Marcus Vale had authorized payments to five different shell vendors over almost seven years.

Some money had been returned to hospital accounts.

Some had financed executive bonuses disguised as consulting expenses.

Nearly three million dollars remained unaccounted for.

But the most dangerous evidence was an email exchange between Marcus and another hospital administrator.

They discussed Richard Hale’s questions.

One sentence stood out.

If Hale keeps pushing, freeze his access and make the discrepancies look like foundation-side errors.

Marcus had been preparing to blame Megan’s father.

Years later, he had used the same strategy against Megan.

Jack had not invented that tactic.

He had learned it.

Megan sat silently while Naomi explained.

Gerald watched her carefully.

“You don’t have to lead this investigation.”

“Yes, I do.”

“You’ve already survived one criminal case.”

“This existed before my marriage fell apart.”

She pointed toward Richard’s name.

“My father knew something was wrong.”

That evening, Megan returned home and checked on Sophie and Ethan.

Both were asleep.

For months, she had been trying to teach them that safety meant life did not need to be constantly investigated.

Now she worried she was becoming the person Ethan had been after the airport—checking every door, every sound, every unexpected message.

Her phone vibrated.

Nora.

Someone broke into my house.

Megan immediately called Gerald.

Nothing valuable had been taken.

No jewelry.

No electronics.

No cash.

Only one drawer had been opened.

The drawer where Nora used to keep the safe-deposit key.

Whoever entered her house had been looking for the evidence.

And whoever it was did not yet know Megan already had it.
