Chapter 28 - The Richard Hale Children’s Center

Two years after Terminal C, construction finished on the Richard Hale Children’s Center.
Recovered funds, the hospital settlement and new donations had transformed an abandoned medical building into a pediatric treatment facility.
No family would receive a bill for services funded through the foundation.
Naomi became chair of the independent financial oversight committee.
Nora Briggs joined the compliance board.
Every major transfer required multiple approvals and external review.
Megan had learned that trust was not weakened by accountability.
It was strengthened by it.
Sophie painted part of the children’s recreation room.
Her mural showed dozens of small houses connected by bright roads.
Ethan helped build interactive mechanical displays for the waiting area.
On opening day, hundreds of families attended.
Megan stood beneath a photograph of her father.
For a moment she wished Richard could see what his warning had become.
Gerald approached.
“You’re supposed to make a speech.”
“I know.”
“You’ve been staring at that photograph for five minutes.”
“I was thinking he almost lost.”
Gerald shook his head.
“No.”
“He died before he could expose Marcus.”
“And left enough protection behind for you to finish it.”
Megan looked toward her children.
Sophie was helping a little girl choose paintbrushes.
Ethan was repairing a toy mechanism.
Maybe Gerald was right.
Richard’s victory had never depended upon living long enough to see Marcus arrested.
He had built something stronger than one investigation.
He had taught Megan that money was valuable only when it protected people rather than power.
Megan walked toward the podium.
This time the cameras did not frighten her.
She no longer had a family reputation to protect.
May you like
She had something better.
A family capable of surviving the truth.
