Chapter 17 - What Richard Left Behind
The storage annex had not been opened in months.
Investigators entered with Megan, Gerald and Naomi.
Dust covered old medical cabinets and stacks of archived grant applications.
At the rear of the building sat fourteen sealed boxes.
The hospital labels had been removed.
Inside the seventh box, Naomi found the ledger.
Marcus had been meticulous.
Dates.
Amounts.
Account numbers.
Initials.
Kickbacks.
The records showed a fraud network larger than anyone expected.
Several transactions predated Jack.
Others continued while Jack was stealing money for himself.
Two senior hospital administrators had received payments.
A purchasing officer had created false equipment contracts.
Marcus had taken the largest share.
But one page made Megan stop.
R.H.
Richard Hale.
Beside his initials was not a payment.
It was a handwritten notation.
REFUSED.
A second notation followed.
Threatens external audit.
Megan touched the page.
Her father had never participated.
He had fought them.
In another box, investigators found copies of letters Richard had prepared for the hospital board.
He had intended to demand an independent audit.
The letters were never sent because he died three days later.
Gerald quietly handed one to Megan.
At the bottom Richard had written a personal reminder:
Speak to Megan before filing. She deserves to understand what her name may someday protect.
Megan had spent years wondering why her father created so many defensive clauses around the foundation.
Now she understood.
Richard had not distrusted her.
He had been preparing her.
Naomi turned another page of the ledger.
Then she stopped.
“There’s a payment dated six weeks after Jack was arrested.”
Everyone looked at her.
Jack had already been removed.
Yet the theft had continued.
