Chapter 6 - Terminal C

Traffic crawled toward the airport.
Megan called Sophie through the tablet, but the call went unanswered. She tried Jack next.
He rejected the call.
A minute later, he sent a message.
Entering surgery. Can’t talk.
Megan replied with a single sentence.
Please call me. I’m worried.
Jack called almost immediately.
Hospital sounds played faintly in the background—rolling wheels, distant announcements and a mechanical beep.
Megan recognized the performance.
He had probably found an audio recording online or asked Olivia to play it from another phone.
“What happened?” Megan asked.
“Highway collision,” Jack said. “Multiple injuries. I’m scrubbing into emergency surgery.”
“Which hospital?”
There was a pause.
“St. Augustine, obviously.”
“I thought you were covering Baylor tonight.”
“The patient was transferred.”
Every answer arrived quickly enough to sound plausible.
Megan entered Terminal C while he continued talking.
“I’ll be at the hospital all night,” he said. “Don’t wait up.”
“I won’t.”
She ended the call and searched the departure screens.
The flight to Paris was boarding from Gate C27.
Gerald’s investigator texted her a photograph showing Jack’s group near a restaurant below the upper walkway.
Megan took the escalator to the second floor.
From there, she saw everything.
Helen arranged the children beside the luggage. Lauren held Jack’s phone while he adjusted his tie. Olivia stood in white, smiling like a bride at an informal wedding.
Then Jack’s phone rang.
He stepped away from Olivia and answered Megan’s call.
“I’m scrubbing into emergency surgery.”
Megan could see his lips forming each word.
The background noise had not come from a recording. It was the airport itself. The beeping was a mobility cart reversing. The rolling wheels came from suitcases.
He had relied on Megan’s trust to transform the sounds into a hospital.
When the call ended, Olivia wrapped her arms around his neck.
Jack kissed her.
Helen photographed them.
Lauren clapped.
“So every one of them knew,” Megan whispered.
Only the children did not smile.
Ethan stared at the floor. Sophie held the tablet against her chest.
Megan turned away before they could look up.
She called Gerald.
“Open the sealed file.”
While Gerald prepared the release, Naomi monitored the final overseas account. Jack had scheduled the last transfer from the foundation’s emergency reserve less than ten minutes earlier.
The instruction included a message written from his hospital email account.
Complete before departure. My wife believes I am operating tonight.
It was the direct evidence they needed.
Gerald’s voice became quiet.
“Everything?”
“Everything.”
“Once released, it can’t be reversed.”
Megan looked through the glass at her family.
There had been a time when she would have protected Jack from embarrassment. She would have negotiated privately, returned the money quietly and invented an explanation for the children.
But silence would protect the person who caused the harm, not the people he had harmed.
“Upload all of it.”
At 8:19 p.m., the sealed file opened.
Within seconds, the hospital’s compliance system suspended Jack’s credentials pending investigation. The bank froze the disputed accounts. The foundation removed his access. The airline received an alert concerning the children’s travel authorization.
Airport security began walking toward Gate C27.

Jack looked up.
And saw Megan.
