Chapter 20 - The Story Marcus Told
Three days later, Megan woke to dozens of messages.
Her name was trending across local news.
Documents had been leaked anonymously to reporters.
They appeared to show Megan approving broad financial authority for St. Augustine.
One email seemed particularly damaging.
Make whatever transfers are necessary. I trust Jack and the hospital team.
The message carried Megan’s name.
A television commentator asked whether Jack Carter had been made the scapegoat for a scheme actually controlled by the wealthy foundation heiress he married.
Marcus Vale gave a carefully prepared statement.
“I have always respected Mrs. Carter, but the public deserves complete transparency.”
Megan nearly admired the audacity.
He was using Richard’s old warning against her exactly as planned.
Ethan saw the story before Megan could shield him.
“Are they saying you stole money?”
“No.”
“Then why are they lying?”
“Because sometimes people create confusion when the truth frightens them.”
At school, Sophie overheard two parents discussing Megan.
She came home furious.
“Why don’t you tell everyone Marcus did it?”
“Because investigators need evidence, not anger.”
“That’s not fair.”
“No.”
Megan sat beside her.
“It isn’t.”
That evening Naomi called.
The leaked email was fake.
Not entirely fake.
Marcus had combined part of a legitimate message Megan sent years earlier with a sentence taken from a different conversation.
Metadata from the hospital archive showed the file had been modified eight days earlier.
Using an administrator credential assigned to the CFO’s office.
Marcus had tried to frame Megan.
Instead, he had created fresh evidence.
Gerald called the prosecutor.
By midnight, investigators had obtained an emergency order preserving every device in Marcus Vale’s office.
The following morning they seized his computer.
And inside a deleted folder, they found something Marcus had apparently forgotten to erase.
