Chapter 26 - Helen at the Door
Helen arrived two weeks later.
She did not enter the house.
She waited outside until Megan opened the door.
“I wanted to ask permission first.”
That alone showed how much had changed.
Helen held a small box.
Inside were photographs, school programs and birthday cards from the years when Jack’s family had still appeared whole.
“I found these while cleaning.”
Megan accepted the box.
Helen remained on the porch.
“I owe you the truth about Paris.”
Megan waited.
“I knew Jack planned to leave you.”
“I know.”
“I knew Olivia was going.”
“I know.”
Helen’s eyes filled with tears.
“I also hid copies of Sophie and Ethan’s passports for him.”
That Megan had not known.
Helen looked sick with shame.
“He told me you would use the children to punish him if you discovered the affair.”
“And you believed him.”
“I wanted to.”
That answer was painfully honest.
Helen continued.
“I spent his whole life rescuing him from consequences. Teachers. Coaches. Employers. You.”
“Why?”
“Because I thought a good mother protected her child.”
Megan looked at her.
“A good mother prepares her child to become someone who doesn’t need protection from the truth.”
Helen nodded.
“I know that now.”
She did not ask to be forgiven.
She asked only whether she could continue supervised contact with Ethan and Sophie.
Megan agreed.
Boundaries remained.
Trust would not be restored by one conversation.
But Megan understood something she had not understood after the airport.
Consequences did not always require permanent hatred.
Sometimes they required distance.
Sometimes rebuilding.
Sometimes acceptance that a relationship would never return to what it had been.
Helen turned to leave.
Then stopped.
“Richard would be proud of you.”
Megan almost corrected her.
May you like
Instead she smiled.
“I think he’d be proud the children are safe.”
