Chapter 22 - The Locker at DFW

Investigators obtained a warrant for the airport locker.
Inside was a cheap black phone, two passports belonging to Marcus Vale and $38,000 in cash.
The phone contained messages stretching back five years.
Marcus had coordinated fake invoices.
Directed Jack to specific accounts.
Warned purchasing officers when auditors were coming.
And repeatedly discussed using Megan’s wealth as both a source of money and a shield.
The most damaging conversation had occurred after Jack began planning Paris.
Marcus warned him that leaving the country with the children could attract attention.
Jack responded that once Megan realized what was happening, she would negotiate privately.
Marcus replied:
That is why you married the right woman.
Megan read the transcript once.
Then handed it back.
Gerald watched her.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
“You don’t look surprised.”
“I’m not.”
That was what hurt differently now.
The old Megan would have searched every sentence for evidence that Jack had once loved her.
The woman standing in the airport investigation office no longer needed that answer.
Perhaps he had loved her once.
Perhaps he had loved access, comfort and admiration more.
Either way, love without honesty had not protected anyone.
Outside the office windows, passengers rolled suitcases toward security.
Megan remembered the first night at Terminal C.
This building had once represented the moment her life collapsed.
Now evidence hidden inside it was helping finish what she had started.
Her phone rang.
Naomi.
“The court approved the freeze on Marcus’s assets.”
“Good.”
“There’s more.”
Marcus had disappeared from his house.
His attorney claimed not to know where he was.
His travel restrictions were due to take effect at midnight.
And Marcus’s Zurich flight departed at 11:20 p.m.

Megan looked toward the departure board.
The clock showed 9:47.
