Chapter 7 - The Woman Behind the Messages

Evelyn Bennett agreed to speak to police voluntarily.
She arrived at the station in a navy suit, pearl earrings and an expression of mild irritation.
Claire had seen that expression at Thanksgiving dinners, school recitals and charity events.
It was the face Evelyn used when other people disappointed her.
She did not look like a woman worried about being connected to a conspiracy involving a five-year-old child.
She looked inconvenienced.
Through her attorney, Evelyn denied everything.
The surveillance account using her office phone number?
Someone must have entered the number without permission.
The emails between her and Vanessa?
Fabricated.
The hidden camera?
She had never seen it.
The trust amendment?
Michael Sullivan had asked her to notarize it.
The fact that Michael had been heavily medicated?
She did not remember.
The staged custody plan?
Absurd.
Claire was not permitted inside the interview room.
Ortiz later summarized it for Maya.
Evelyn had an answer for every question.
But confidence was not evidence.
The second phone became evidence.
Forensic technicians unlocked it.
Hundreds of messages had been deleted.
Dozens were recovered.
Vanessa had communicated with a contact saved as E.
Some messages were mundane.
Grant is home early.
Lily is with Claire this weekend.
Chloe has a fever.
Others were not.
Need stronger footage.
Grant still hesitating.
Claire doesn't react enough.
Lily is too attached to her mother.
Then one dated four days before the haircut.
E: Use something visual. Something she cannot ignore.
Vanessa: Hair?
E: That would work.
Vanessa: Lily will scream.
E: Better.
Claire could not read further.
She walked away from Owen's screen.
Maya read the next messages.
When Claire returned, Maya's face was hard.
"Tell me."
"You don't need every detail."
"I need all of it."
Maya turned the screen.
Vanessa had written:
What if she doesn't hit me?
E had replied:
Put the scissors where Claire can see them. She will do something.
Claire felt shame crawl up her neck.
Vanessa had predicted her.
Manipulated her.
And Claire had delivered exactly what they wanted.
Maya said, "This doesn't excuse what you did, but it establishes provocation."
"I cut her hair."
"You did."
"In front of two children."
"Yes."
Claire appreciated Maya refusing to lie.
"I could lose Lily over that."
"Not based on everything we now know."
"But they wanted me to."
"Yes."
Claire looked toward the window.
"Why wasn't the footage sent to court immediately?"
"Because the plan fell apart when you took the tablet."
Claire remembered.
Vanessa had left the device on the table.
But perhaps she had expected to retrieve it after Claire left.
Instead Claire spotted the archive.
A mistake.
The first mistake Vanessa had made.
Or perhaps the first Claire had noticed.
Owen opened another recovered message.
Vanessa: What happens after Grant gets custody?
E: He won't keep it long.
Vanessa: What does that mean?
E: Do your part.
Grant, standing across the room, read it twice.
"What does 'he won't keep it long' mean?"
No one answered.
Claire studied him.
"You were never supposed to be the final trustee."
Grant looked at her.
"Apparently not."
"If I lost custody, you got control of Lily's shares."
"Yes."
"And if you couldn't serve, Evelyn did."
"Yes."
Claire spoke carefully.
"What would make you unable to serve?"
Grant understood.
His face changed.
"Death."
The room became silent.
Maya said, "Or incapacity. Or legal disqualification."
Grant stared at the recovered message.
He won't keep it long.
For the first time, his fear was no longer about losing his daughter.
It was about himself.
Ortiz requested police protection for Grant and Chloe until they could determine whether the messages represented a credible threat.
Grant resisted.
Claire did not.
"You've already ignored enough warnings."
He looked at her.
"I deserve that."
"This isn't about what you deserve. Chloe is with you."
Grant nodded.
He accepted the protection.
That evening, Claire sat beside Lily while a stylist repaired what she could of the child's hair.
The stylist's name was Danielle.
She worked slowly.
She did not pretend she could restore what had been taken.
Instead she shaped Lily's uneven hair into a soft short bob.
When she finished, Lily stared at the mirror.
"Do I look like me?"
Claire's throat tightened.
"Yes."
Lily touched the side of her head.
"My hair is short."
"It is."
"Will it grow?"
"Yes."
"All the way?"
"All the way."
Lily smiled for the first time in two days.
Claire nearly cried.
Then Lily asked, "Will Chloe's mommy grow nice?"
Claire looked at her reflection.
"I don't know."
"Maybe if somebody cuts the mean parts off."
Danielle paused.
Claire hugged her daughter.
"I wish people worked that way."
At bedtime, Lily fell asleep quickly.
Claire remained beside her for almost an hour.
At eleven thirty her phone rang.
Grant.
"Claire."
Something in his voice made her sit upright.
"What happened?"
"Someone was in the house."
"You're supposed to have police outside."
"They were outside."
"Where's Chloe?"
"With an officer."
Claire stood.
"Are you hurt?"
"No."
"What was taken?"
"Nothing."
Claire stopped.
"Then why were they there?"
Grant's breathing was uneven.
"They left something."
"What?"
"In my father's old desk."
Claire remembered the desk.
Heavy mahogany.
Grant had inherited it after his father's death.
"What did they leave?"
"A photograph."
Claire waited.
"Of what?"
Grant did not answer.
"Grant."
"It's your father."
Claire felt cold.
"When?"
"I don't know. It was taken in a hospital."
"Before he died?"
"Yes."
"What else?"
"Richard Vale is standing beside the bed."
Claire's pulse accelerated.
"And my mother."
Claire whispered, "Evelyn."
"Yes."
Grant took a breath.
"Claire, your father isn't signing the trust amendment."
"What is he doing?"
"He's unconscious."
Claire closed her eyes.
Grant continued.
"But someone is holding his hand around a pen."
Claire could barely speak.
"Who?"
May you like
Grant's answer made her stand perfectly still.
"Thomas Vale."
