Chapter 2 - What Lily Was Told to Say

Claire did not argue.

Ten minutes later she had Lily buckled into the back seat of her car.

The tablet lay inside Claire's handbag.

The plastic bag containing Lily's hair was beside it.

Grant had insisted Chloe remain with him.

Vanessa had screamed that Claire was stealing private property.

Grant had ignored her.

He had taken Vanessa's phone and ordered her to stay in the living room.

Claire did not know whether he had the right to do that.

She did not care.

All she cared about was Lily.

They drove directly to Claire's pediatrician.

Dr. Rebecca Moore had treated Lily since infancy.

Her expression changed the moment she saw the child's hair.

"What happened?"

Claire placed the bag and tablet on the desk.

"I'm not sure I know yet."

Dr. Moore examined the cut above Lily's ear, photographed it with Claire's permission and carefully documented every injury.

The cut required no stitches.

But Rebecca was far more concerned about Lily's emotional state.

She asked Claire to wait outside for a few minutes while she spoke gently with Lily.

Claire hated leaving.

Rebecca assured her the door would remain partly open.

From the hallway, Claire could hear only fragments.

"Did anyone tell you what to say?"

A pause.

Then Lily's small voice.

"Vanessa."

"What did she tell you?"

"That Mommy would go away."

Claire gripped the edge of a chair.

Rebecca asked, "Why would Mommy go away?"

"Because bad mommies lose their kids."

Claire closed her eyes.

When Rebecca finally invited Claire back inside, the doctor's face was grim.

"This did not begin today."

Claire stared at her.

"What do you mean?"

"Lily described other incidents."

Claire sat down.

Rebecca did not dramatize them.

She simply listed what Lily had disclosed.

Vanessa had occasionally hidden Lily's desserts and told Grant she refused dinner.

She had taken toys from Lily's room, placed them in Chloe's room and accused Lily of stealing them back.

She had once locked Lily in a laundry room for eleven minutes because Lily refused to apologize for something she insisted she had not done.

She had repeatedly told Lily that Claire was tired of being her mother.

Claire felt physically sick.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

Rebecca answered carefully.

"Children sometimes don't disclose mistreatment because they've been frightened, confused, or convinced they caused it."

Claire looked at Lily.

Her daughter sat nearby drawing a house.

There were three people outside it.

Claire.

Lily.

And Chloe.

No Grant.

No Vanessa.

Claire swallowed.

Rebecca lowered her voice.

"You need to contact the police and your attorney."

Claire nodded.

"I will."

"And Claire?"

"Yes?"

"Do not destroy or alter anything on that tablet."

"I won't."

Rebecca hesitated.

"There's something else."

Claire looked up.

"Lily said Vanessa took her to another doctor."

Claire's heart stopped.

"What?"

"Grant never told me."

"Lily says Grant wasn't there."

Rebecca crouched beside Lily.

"Sweetheart, do you remember the doctor's name?"

Lily shook her head.

"What did the office look like?"

"There were green chairs."

"Did the doctor examine you?"

Lily shrugged.

"A lady asked questions."

"What kind of questions?"

Lily looked toward Claire.

"She asked if Mommy gets angry."

Claire's hands went numb.

Rebecca continued gently.

"What did you say?"

"I said sometimes."

"Did Vanessa tell you to say anything else?"

Lily nodded.

"She said I should tell the lady Mommy throws things."

Claire stared at her.

"I have never thrown anything at Lily."

Rebecca nodded.

"I know."

Lily frowned.

"I told her Mommy dropped a plate once."

Claire remembered.

Six months ago she had dropped a dinner plate while washing dishes.

It had slipped from her wet fingers.

Vanessa had been visiting that evening.

At the time, it had meant nothing.

Now it meant everything.

Claire left the clinic with three things she had not possessed that morning.

Medical documentation.

A referral to a child forensic interviewer.

And rage sharpened into purpose.

She called her attorney from the parking lot.

Maya Chen answered on the second ring.

"Claire?"

"I need you."

"What's wrong?"

Claire looked through the windshield at Lily, who was asleep in the back seat.

"Someone has been manufacturing evidence to take my daughter."

Maya was silent for half a second.

"Where are you?"

"Dr. Moore's office."

"Don't go home."

Claire's fingers tightened around the phone.

"Why?"

"Because if there's a custody strategy underway, whoever is behind it may already know where you're going."

Claire looked around the parking lot.

A black SUV sat two rows away.

Its engine was running.

Her pulse quickened.

"Claire?"

"I'm here."

"Go somewhere public."

Claire started the car.

"What about the tablet?"

"Keep it offline."

"I put it in airplane mode."

"Good."

"Maya, there's a man's voice on one of the recordings."

"Do you recognize it?"

"No."

"Does Grant?"

Claire hesitated.

"I think he does."

Maya was quiet.

"Did he admit it?"

"No."

"Then don't assume he's on your side."

Claire almost laughed.

After everything that had happened since their divorce, that was not difficult.

She drove to a crowded cafe attached to a hotel.

Maya arrived thirty minutes later carrying a laptop and the expression of someone prepared for war.

She watched the haircut video once.

Only once.

Then she pushed the tablet away.

"We're filing for emergency temporary custody today."

Claire nodded.

"What else?"

"We preserve everything."

Maya studied the archive.

There were sixty-three files visible.

Some were videos.

Some were PDFs.

Some were audio clips.

Several titles made Claire's stomach tighten.

Lily Rage 04.

Lily Theft Incident.

Claire Drinking.

Mother Instability Timeline.

"Maya."

"I see it."

"I don't drink around Lily."

"I know."

"What's Mother Instability Timeline?"

"We'll find out."

Maya clicked it.

The file would not open offline.

Claire wanted to reconnect immediately.

Maya stopped her.

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"If the account is remotely managed, reconnecting could trigger deletion."

"Then how do we get it?"

"With someone who knows how to preserve digital evidence."

Maya made three calls.

The last was to a forensic technology specialist named Owen Price.

He agreed to meet them in a private office two blocks away.

They were packing when Claire's phone rang.

Grant.

She stared at the screen.

Maya said, "Answer. Speakerphone."

Claire did.

"Where are you?"

Grant's voice sounded strained.

"Why?"

"Claire, Vanessa is gone."

Claire froze.

"What?"

"She left."

"You said you were keeping her there."

"I went upstairs to check on Chloe. When I came back, the patio door was open."

Claire looked at Maya.

"Where's Chloe?"

"With me."

"Call the police."

"I already did."

"Grant, who was the man on the recording?"

Silence.

"Grant."

"I don't know for certain."

"But you recognized his voice."

"I recognized the phrase."

"What phrase?"

"Custody file."

Claire felt the room narrowing around her.

"Why?"

Grant exhaled.

"Three months ago Vanessa told me she was worried about Lily."

Claire said nothing.

"She said Lily was becoming aggressive. That she was having emotional problems after the divorce."

"And you believed her?"

"I believed some of it."

Claire almost shouted, but Maya raised one hand.

Grant continued.

"Vanessa showed me videos."

"What videos?"

"Lily screaming. Throwing things. Pushing Chloe."

Claire's anger turned icy.

"You never asked me."

"I thought you would defend her."

"She's five."

"I know."

"No, Grant. You apparently don't."

"I didn't know Vanessa was staging anything."

"Did you contact a lawyer?"

A long silence.

Claire's voice dropped.

"Did you?"

"Yes."

The word hit harder than she expected.

Maya closed her eyes.

Claire whispered, "You were trying to take Lily from me."

"No. I was asking what my options were."

"That's not what I asked."

Grant sounded desperate.

"Claire, something changed two weeks ago. Vanessa started asking about Lily's trust."

Maya looked up sharply.

Claire frowned.

"What trust?"

Another silence.

This one was different.

Grant knew he had said too much.

"Grant."

"I thought your father told you."

"My father died four years ago."

"I know."

"What trust?"

Grant spoke slowly.

"Your father left Lily money."

Claire's throat tightened.

"How much?"

"I don't know exactly."

"Grant."

"Somewhere around twelve million dollars."

Claire stopped breathing.

Maya stared at her.

Claire's father had been wealthy.

But not twelve-million-dollars-to-one-grandchild wealthy.

At least she had never believed he was.

"Why didn't I know?"

"Because it doesn't fully vest until she's eighteen."

"Who controls it before then?"

Grant did not answer immediately.

Claire already knew the answer mattered.

"Who controls it, Grant?"

"You do."

"Then why would Vanessa care?"

Grant's next words changed the direction of everything.

"Because if you're declared unfit or lose legal custody, control transfers to Lily's other legal parent."

Claire looked at Maya.

Grant.

The money would transfer to Grant.

Claire whispered, "And if something happened to you?"

Grant went silent.

Claire felt dread gather.

"If something happened to you, Grant?"

"Then the successor trustee named in your father's amendment takes over."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"I swear I don't."

Maya took out a notebook.

Claire asked, "Where is the trust document?"

"At my father's old law firm."

"Why does your family's law firm have my father's trust?"

"I don't know."

The answer came too quickly.

Maya wrote something down.

Then Grant lowered his voice.

"Claire, there's more."

"What?"

"The police searched Vanessa's purse before she disappeared."

Claire waited.

"They found a second phone."

"Did they take it?"

"No. Vanessa left before they could question her. She must have taken it with her."

"What was on it?"

"I only saw the lock screen."

"And?"

"There was a message."

Claire's skin prickled.

"What did it say?"

Grant hesitated.

"Phase one is complete. Make sure Claire reacts on camera."

Claire slowly remembered the slap.

The scissors.

Vanessa's hair falling to the floor.

The tablet sitting conveniently awake.

Maya's eyes widened.

Claire whispered, "She wanted me to hit her."

Grant said nothing.

Claire suddenly understood.

The haircut.

The confrontation.

Vanessa standing calmly while Claire became angrier.

The scissors left in plain view.

The tablet on the table.

It had all been arranged.

Not merely to hurt Lily.

To provoke Claire.

Claire had walked straight into the final scene of someone else's plan.

And somewhere, possibly inside that house, another camera had been recording the entire thing.
