Chapter 11 - The Hearing

Police moved Grant and Chloe to a protected location.
Claire was told nothing about where.
She agreed.
For once, Grant did too.
The family court hearing was postponed because Vanessa now faced multiple criminal charges.
Child endangerment.
Coercion.
Evidence fabrication.
Conspiracy.
Potential fraud.
The district attorney also began evaluating charges against Evelyn.
But Claire's custody case still needed resolution.
Grant made the decision before the judge could make it for him.
He withdrew his petition for primary custody.
Then he went further.
He asked that Claire receive sole temporary legal custody while he completed parenting counseling and cooperated with investigators.
Claire read the filing three times.
Maya watched her.
"You don't have to forgive him."
"I know."
"You don't even have to trust him."
"I know."
"But?"
Claire put the papers down.
"He finally chose Lily over being right."
Maya nodded.
"That's something."
"Not enough."
"No."
"But something."
The hearing lasted only forty minutes.
Grant testified voluntarily.
"I failed my daughter."
His attorney shifted uncomfortably.
Grant continued.
"I allowed someone else's story about Claire to become more important than what I knew about Claire as Lily's mother."
Claire looked at him.
The judge asked, "Do you believe Ms. Bennett poses any danger to Lily?"
"No."
"Do you believe you currently should have unsupervised custody?"
Grant paused.
"No."
The judge studied him.
"Why?"
Grant's voice broke slightly.
"Because my daughter asked me if I was angry at her for being hurt."
The courtroom became silent.
Grant wiped his eyes.
"A five-year-old thought being abused might make her father angry. I helped create the environment that made her believe that."
Claire had to look down.
The judge granted Claire sole temporary custody.
Grant retained supervised visitation.
The next review would occur in three months.
It was not a permanent ending.
But Lily was safe.
For Claire, that mattered more than winning.
Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.
The story had leaked after Bennett Capital announced Evelyn's suspension.
Claire refused every interview.
Grant did too.
Evelyn issued a statement through counsel calling the allegations "a malicious family dispute."
Vanessa remained silent.
Thomas remained missing.
Richard remained missing.
The stranger part came later that afternoon.
Claire received a package.
No return address.
Inside was a children's book.
Goodnight Moon.
Her father had read the same book to Lily dozens of times.
Claire nearly dropped it.
Inside the cover someone had written:
Michael knew.
Nothing else.
Maya told her not to touch it further.
Police collected the package.
No usable fingerprints.
No DNA except Claire's after opening.
But hidden inside the spine was a memory card.
Owen extracted the contents.
One audio file.
Claire recognized her father's voice immediately.
Michael sounded weak.
Hospitalized.
But conscious.
"If you're hearing this, I didn't get to fix it."
Claire closed her eyes.
Her father continued.
"Evelyn knows I won't sell. Richard brought me papers. I refused."
Paper rustled.
"I don't trust them."
Claire could hear hospital equipment in the background.
Then Michael's voice dropped.
"Thomas came tonight."
Claire's eyes opened.
"He says he can protect the company if I appoint him trust protector."
Claire looked at Maya.
The trust had done exactly that.
Michael continued.
"I don't like him. But I believe he's afraid of his father."
Claire frowned.
Thomas afraid of Richard?
The recording continued.
"He says Richard and Evelyn have been moving money through Bennett Capital. He says they need my company for something."
Claire's pulse quickened.
"He gave me records."
The audio crackled.
"I told Thomas I would go to federal investigators when I'm discharged."
Claire felt a cold certainty.
Her father had never left the hospital.
Michael continued.
"If something happens to me, Claire needs to know the trust amendment Evelyn brings later is false."
Claire's breath stopped.
Her father had predicted it.
"Claire, if you're listening..."
His voice broke.
Claire covered her mouth.
"I should have told you more. I thought keeping you away from business kept you safe."
Tears filled her eyes.
"I was wrong."
A door opened on the recording.
Michael stopped speaking.
A man's voice said, "Who are you talking to?"
Claire leaned toward the speaker.
She recognized the voice from old memories.
Richard Vale.
Michael answered.
"No one."
The recording ended.
Claire sat silently.
Maya whispered, "Your father knew."
Claire nodded.
"But who sent this?"
No one had an answer.
The book had been mailed from Albany.
The handwriting was unrecognizable.
The memory card was old.
There was no metadata indicating who copied it.
Grant arrived after hearing about the recording.
Claire played it for him.
When it ended, Grant stared at the floor.
"My mother may have helped kill your father."
Claire did not answer.
"I don't know what to say."
"Then don't say anything."
Grant nodded.
His phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
He almost ignored it.
Then answered.
"Hello?"
Claire watched his face change.
"Who is this?"
A man's voice was faintly audible.
Grant went completely still.
"Thomas?"
Claire stood.
Grant switched to speaker.
The voice came through clearly.
"Hello, Grant."
Grant stared at the phone.
"You've been dead for six years."
Thomas laughed softly.
"That was the idea."
Claire's skin crawled.
Grant said, "Where is Richard?"
Thomas ignored the question.
"Is Claire there?"
Grant looked at her.
Claire stepped closer.
"I'm here."
A pause.
Then Thomas said, "You sound like your father."
Claire's hands curled into fists.
"You knew him."
"Better than you think."
"Did you kill him?"
Thomas laughed again.
"No."
"Did Evelyn?"
Silence.
"Did Richard?"
Another silence.
Claire whispered, "Why did you send the recording?"
"I didn't."
Claire looked at Maya.
"Then who did?"
Thomas's voice changed.
For the first time he sounded genuinely interested.
"You received Michael's recording?"
Claire did not answer.
Thomas continued.
"That's unexpected."
Grant demanded, "Where's Chloe?"
"Safe, apparently."
"You stay away from her."
Thomas's voice hardened.
"She's my daughter."
"You abandoned her."
"I protected her."
"You used her mother."
"Vanessa made her own choices."
Claire stepped closer to the phone.
"Where is Richard?"
Thomas paused.
May you like
Then said, "Ask Evelyn."
The call disconnected.
