Chapter 3 - The Father Who Arrived Too Late

By four o'clock that afternoon, Claire had an emergency custody petition in progress and Detective Samuel Ortiz sitting across from her.
Owen Price had cloned the tablet's storage without reconnecting it to the internet.
Everything recoverable had been copied to an encrypted drive.
Claire wanted to watch every file immediately.
Ortiz refused.
"Not alone."
"I'm her mother."
"Exactly."
Claire stared at him.
Ortiz was in his late forties, calm and measured, with the weary patience of someone who had seen good people destroy themselves by reacting before thinking.
"There may be material you don't want Lily seeing you react to," he said.
"Lily isn't here."
"She's with your sister now. Good. Keep it that way."
Claire nodded.
Her younger sister Natalie had collected Lily from the cafe and taken her to Claire's apartment.
Claire had hated letting Lily out of sight.
But Maya had been right.
Lily did not need to spend the afternoon listening to adults discuss custody traps and hidden recordings.
Owen turned his laptop toward them.
"I recovered the local archive."
Claire saw folders.
SUBJECT L.
MOTHER.
CHLOE.
GRANT.
PRIVATE.
Ortiz leaned closer.
"How many files?"
"One hundred and seventeen."
Claire stared at him.
"The tablet showed sixty-three."
"Those were undeleted."
"And the others?"
"Deleted locally, but not securely overwritten."
Claire felt sick.
Owen clicked SUBJECT L.
The earliest date was seven months ago.
Claire thought back.
Seven months ago Vanessa had still been engaged to Grant.
She had not yet moved into his house.
She had already been recording Lily.
The first video was short.
Lily sat at a breakfast table.
Vanessa's voice came from behind the camera.
"Who spilled the milk?"
Lily answered, "Chloe."
Vanessa said, "Are you lying?"
"No."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
The camera moved to Chloe.
The other girl looked terrified.
Vanessa said, "Chloe says you did it."
Chloe whispered, "No, I didn't."
Vanessa stopped recording.
Claire looked at Owen.
"That's it?"
"That's the raw file."
"What do you mean raw?"
Owen opened another version titled LILY LYING 01.
The same scene had been edited.
Chloe's denial was gone.
Instead the video ended after Vanessa said Chloe blamed Lily.
Someone had deliberately changed context.
Another video showed Lily crying beside a broken lamp.
In the raw version, Vanessa knocked it over while moving a chair.
In the edited version, the footage began after the lamp shattered.
"Why did you break it?" Vanessa asked.
"I didn't."
"Then why are you standing there?"
Claire covered her mouth.
Maya whispered, "She's manufacturing behavioral incidents."
Ortiz said nothing.
The third file was worse.
Lily and Chloe were playing with building blocks.
Vanessa entered.
"Chloe, take Lily's tower."
Chloe looked confused.
"What?"
"Take it."
Chloe obeyed.
Lily protested.
Vanessa said, "Take it back."
Lily pulled one block from Chloe's hand.
Vanessa stopped recording.
The edited version began with Lily grabbing Chloe.
It was labeled AGGRESSION.
Claire closed her eyes.
"Grant saw these?"
No one answered.
Because Claire already knew.
Grant had told her Vanessa showed him videos.
These videos.
Maya said quietly, "This is how she convinced him Lily had problems."
Claire's phone buzzed.
Grant again.
Ortiz nodded for her to answer.
Grant sounded breathless.
"They found Vanessa's car."
"Where?"
"Abandoned near the commuter station."
"Was she there?"
"No."
Claire looked at Ortiz.
He was already writing.
Grant continued.
"Claire, I'm coming to you."
"No."
"I need to explain."
"You need to explain to Detective Ortiz."
"Fine."
Claire looked at Ortiz.
He gave a small nod.
She texted Grant the address of the precinct annex.
He arrived forty minutes later.
Without Vanessa.
Without his usual suit jacket.
Without the polished confidence Claire had once found attractive.
He looked older.
He sat across from her.
"I'm sorry."
Claire stared at him.
"Don't."
"I should have told you."
"You should have protected your daughter."
"I thought I was."
Claire laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
"By secretly speaking to lawyers about taking her away from me?"
Grant looked at the floor.
Ortiz asked, "Mr. Bennett, when did Vanessa first suggest Claire was an unsafe parent?"
"About four months ago."
"Did she use that phrase?"
"Not at first."
"What did she say?"
"That Claire was overwhelmed after the divorce. That Lily was acting out because there weren't enough boundaries."
Claire said, "Vanessa barely knew me."
Grant looked ashamed.
"She said Lily told her things."
"Things Vanessa told Lily to say."
"I know that now."
Maya leaned forward.
"Who was the attorney?"
Grant hesitated.
"Richard Vale."
Claire looked at him.
She knew the name.
Everyone in their part of Connecticut did.
Vale & Bennett had once been the law firm created by Grant's father and Richard Vale.
Grant's father had died three years earlier.
Richard Vale still handled complicated estates for some of the wealthiest families in the state.
Including, apparently, Claire's father.
Maya asked, "Did Vale suggest creating a custody file?"
Grant swallowed.
"Yes."
Claire's pulse quickened.
"Was he the voice on the recording?"
"No."
"You're sure?"
"Richard's voice is lower."
Ortiz asked, "Did Mr. Vale know Vanessa was filming Lily?"
Grant shook his head.
"I don't know."
"Did he tell you to film her?"
"He told me documentation matters in custody cases."
Claire stared.
"Documentation."
Grant flinched.
"I didn't know she was creating incidents."
Ortiz continued.
"Who else knew?"
"My mother."
Claire looked up.
"Evelyn?"
Grant nodded.
Of course.
Evelyn Bennett had never liked Claire.
Not because Claire had done anything to her.
Because Claire had been born outside Evelyn's world.
Claire's father had built his wealth through construction.
Evelyn's family had inherited theirs through generations.
To Evelyn, that distinction mattered.
"When did you tell your mother?" Claire asked.
"When Vanessa first started talking about Lily."
"And what did Evelyn say?"
Grant looked uncomfortable.
"She said I should protect my daughter."
Claire almost stood.
Maya touched her wrist.
Grant quickly added, "She meant from what she thought was happening."
"What she wanted to believe was happening."
"I don't know."
Claire leaned toward him.
"Where is your mother now?"
"At her house."
Ortiz wrote the address.
Then Owen interrupted.
"I found something."
Everyone turned.
He had opened the PRIVATE folder.
Inside were several scanned documents.
One was a copy of Claire's father's trust.
Maya moved closer.
"Open it."
The document contained sixty-two pages.
Claire's eyes scanned names.
Her father.
Claire.
Lily.
Grant.
Then a clause highlighted in yellow.
Maya read silently.
Her expression changed.
"What?"
Claire asked.
Maya did not answer immediately.
Instead she scrolled to the signature page.
"What?"
Claire demanded.
Maya looked at her.
"This isn't the trust Grant described."
Grant frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"Lily doesn't simply inherit twelve million dollars at eighteen."
Claire looked between them.
"What does she inherit?"
Maya turned the screen.
"Thirty percent of your father's remaining ownership in Bennett Urban Holdings."
Claire went still.
Grant stared.
Bennett Urban Holdings had grown enormously since Claire's father died.
The company owned commercial developments in five states.
Its current value was rumored to exceed four hundred million dollars.
Claire whispered, "Thirty percent?"
Maya nodded.
Grant said, "I didn't know."
Claire looked at him.
"How can you not know?"
"I only saw a summary."
Maya scrolled.
"There's more."
The trust contained a control provision.
Until Lily turned twenty-five, her shares would be voted by the acting trustee.
Claire.
If Claire became legally incapacitated or lost parental rights, voting control transferred to the secondary trustee.
Grant.
And if Grant could not serve, control moved to a third party.
The name had been blacked out on the copy stored in Vanessa's folder.
Owen enlarged the page.
"Someone digitally covered it."
"Can you recover what's underneath?" Ortiz asked.
"Maybe."
Grant stared at the screen.
Claire noticed his face change again.
"You know who's under that black mark."
Grant looked at her.
"No."
"You're doing it again."
"Doing what?"
"That thing with your face right before you lie."
"Claire."
"Who is the third trustee?"
"I told you I don't know."
Owen began examining the document metadata.
After several minutes, he said, "The redaction layer is removable."
Everyone leaned toward the screen.
Owen disabled it.
A name appeared.
Claire stared at it.
Grant stood so quickly his chair hit the wall.
"No."
Maya read the name aloud.
"Evelyn Bennett."
Grant's mother.
The room went silent.
Claire looked at Grant.
"You didn't know?"
He shook his head.
For once, she believed him.
Then Owen opened another file.
It was an email screenshot.
From Vanessa.
To Evelyn Bennett.
Dated six weeks earlier.
The message contained only one line.
GRANT IS ALMOST READY. HOW MUCH LONGER DO YOU NEED?
Evelyn's reply was beneath it.
UNTIL CLAIRE GIVES US THE REACTION WE CAN USE.
Claire slowly remembered the slap.
The scissors.
Vanessa screaming.
A camera positioned somewhere in the room.
She turned toward Grant.
"Your mother wasn't trying to protect Lily from me."
Grant's face collapsed.
May you like
Claire finished the thought.
"She was trying to take control of my father's company."
