Chapter 1 - The Recording That Changed Everything

Claire Bennett had never heard her daughter scream like that.
Not when Lily broke her wrist falling from a swing at three.
Not when thunder shook the windows during the worst storm of the summer.
Not even when Claire and Grant told her they were getting divorced.
This scream came from somewhere deeper.
It came from a five-year-old child realizing that an adult she trusted had hurt her on purpose.
Claire had arrived at Grant's mansion twenty minutes earlier than expected after receiving a strange call from Lily.
There had been no words at first.
Just breathing.
Then crying.
Then Lily had whispered, "Mommy, can you come get me?"
Claire had driven across town without even putting on proper shoes.
Now she stood in the enormous living room of the home her ex-husband shared with his new wife, staring at her daughter.
Lily's pale floral dress was wrinkled.
Her yellow hat trembled between her small hands.
Her normally long brown hair had been hacked into uneven pieces.
Some sections reached her shoulders.
Others barely covered the tops of her ears.
One side looked as though someone had simply closed a pair of scissors around a fistful of hair and cut without caring where the blades landed.
Then Claire saw the dried streak of blood above Lily's left ear.
Her stomach turned.
"Lily."
The child looked up.
"Mommy."
Claire dropped to her knees.
"What happened?"
Lily tried to answer, but her entire body shook.
Claire carefully moved the remaining hair away from the cut.
It was small.
Not medically serious.
But that did not matter.
Someone had put scissors close enough to her daughter's head to make her bleed.
Lily clutched the yellow hat tighter.
"Vanessa said my hair was too beautiful."
Claire slowly turned her head.
Vanessa Cole Bennett stood beside the white sofa.
Grant's new wife looked almost bored.
Her blonde hair was perfectly styled.
Her cream blouse did not have a wrinkle.
Five-year-old Chloe sat on the opposite side of the room, staring at the floor.
Lily continued.
"She said it wasn't fair to Chloe."
Claire's gaze moved to the marble coffee table.
A clear plastic bag sat beside a vase of white flowers.
Inside it was Lily's hair.
Not loose strands.
Cut ponytails.
Claire stood.
She picked up the bag.
Her fingers trembled.
Vanessa sighed.
"Claire, before you start making this into something ridiculous, Lily found the scissors herself."
Claire looked at her.
Vanessa gave a small smile.
"Kids do stupid things."
Lily immediately shook her head.
"No."
Vanessa's smile vanished for half a second.
"Lily."
"No," the child repeated, louder.
Claire stared at Vanessa.
"My daughter says you cut her hair."
"Your daughter is upset."
"Did you?"
"Of course not."
Claire held up the bag.
"Then why did you save it?"
Vanessa hesitated.
Only for a second.
But Claire saw it.
"I was cleaning up," Vanessa said.
Claire took one step toward her.
"Cleaning up?"
"Yes."
"My daughter's hair is in a plastic bag."
"Because I didn't want it all over the floor."
Claire could feel something hot and dangerous climbing into her chest.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"This is exactly why Lily behaves the way she does. You reward every little drama."
Claire moved before she thought.
The slap cracked across the room.
Vanessa stumbled sideways and fell against the sofa.
Chloe gasped.
Claire instantly hated herself for doing it in front of the children.
But then she saw the silver scissors lying on the vanity table near the hallway.
She picked them up.
Vanessa's face changed.
"Don't you dare."
Claire caught a handful of Vanessa's perfectly styled hair.
One cut.
A thick lock fell to the floor.
Vanessa screamed.
"My five-year-old daughter would never cut her own hair!"
Claire threw the scissors down.
She did not touch Vanessa again.
The room went silent.
And in that silence, Claire noticed the tablet.
It sat half hidden beneath a decorative magazine.
Its screen was still awake.
Claire saw a paused video.
A timestamp.
2:14.
And Lily's face.
Claire forgot Vanessa.
She picked up the tablet.
Vanessa went white.
"Give me that."
Claire looked at her.
For the first time since Claire had entered the house, Vanessa was afraid.
"What is this?"
"Nothing."
Vanessa lunged.
Claire stepped away.
"Give it here."
Claire pressed play.
Vanessa froze.
The recording opened with a bright vanity light.
Lily was sitting in a chair.
Her long hair was still intact.
She was crying.
Behind her stood Vanessa.
The scissors were already open.
Claire stopped breathing.
On the video, Vanessa leaned close to Lily's ear.
"Stop moving."
Lily whimpered.
"I want Mommy."
Vanessa smiled toward the tablet's camera.
"Mommy isn't here."
Claire's hand tightened around the device.
Then the recording became worse.
Vanessa lifted Lily's hair.
She held it beside Chloe's.
"See the problem?" she said to the camera.
Someone had been watching.
Comments had once appeared beside the video, though the saved copy displayed only small notification marks.
Lily cried harder.
Vanessa said, "One little haircut and maybe these two girls can finally stop competing."
Chloe appeared at the edge of the recording.
She looked frightened.
"I don't want her hair."
Vanessa ignored her.
Then the scissors closed.
Claire heard Lily scream from the tablet.
The same scream Claire had heard minutes earlier.
Vanessa cut another section.
And another.
Then Lily jerked her head.
The scissors nicked her ear.
Blood appeared.
Vanessa swore.
Lily began sobbing uncontrollably.
The recording should have ended there.
It did not.
Vanessa grabbed Lily's chin.
"Listen to me."
Claire felt suddenly cold.
On the screen, Lily tried to pull away.
Vanessa tightened her grip.
"When your mother comes, you're going to say you took the scissors yourself."
Lily cried.
"No."
"Yes."
"No."
Vanessa leaned closer.
"Do you want Chloe to get in trouble because of you?"
Lily's breathing became ragged.
"No."
"Then say it."
"I cut my hair."
"Louder."
"I cut my hair."
Vanessa smiled.
"Good girl."
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
Beside her, Lily whispered, "I didn't mean it, Mommy."
Claire pulled her daughter against her body.
"I know."
The recording reached two minutes.
Claire expected the screen to turn black.
Instead Vanessa stepped closer to the tablet.
Someone's voice came through its speaker.
A distorted voice.
A man's voice.
Claire could not understand every word.
Only one sentence.
"That's enough for the custody file."
Claire's eyes lifted.
Vanessa was already backing toward the hallway.
Claire paused the recording.
"What custody file?"
Vanessa said nothing.
Claire stepped toward her.
"What custody file?"
"I don't know what he's talking about."
"Who is he?"
"I don't know."
"You were speaking to him."
"No."
Claire looked down.
There was a small icon at the corner of the recording.
Livestream archive.
This had not simply been recorded.
Someone had been watching in real time.
Claire tapped the information symbol.
The video had been streamed to a private account.
The account name was hidden behind an alias.
But the archive folder had a title.
Claire read it once.
Then again.
SUBJECT L.
Her blood ran cold.
There were more files.
Dozens more.
Video thumbnails.
Photographs.
Audio recordings.
Documents.
Every one of them appeared to involve Lily.
Vanessa suddenly ran for the tablet.
Claire pulled it away.
Vanessa grabbed Claire's wrist.
"Give me the tablet."
Lily screamed.
Claire shoved Vanessa back.
Chloe started crying.
And then a voice came from the entrance.
"What the hell is going on?"
Grant Bennett stood in the doorway.
His suitcase dropped from his hand.
He looked at Claire.
Then Vanessa.
Then Lily's destroyed hair.
Then the scissors on the floor.
Claire slowly turned the tablet toward him.
"Your wife has been building a file on our daughter."
Grant stared at the screen.
"What?"
Claire pressed play again.
The room filled with Lily's recorded scream.
Grant's face emptied of color.
Vanessa whispered his name.
"Grant."
He did not look at her.
The recording continued.
He watched his wife cut his daughter's hair.
He watched Lily bleed.
He watched Vanessa force her to lie.
Then the distorted male voice said it again.
"That's enough for the custody file."
Grant looked up.
Claire expected shock.
Instead she saw something else.
Recognition.
It lasted less than a second.
But Claire knew Grant too well.
They had been married for nine years.
She had watched him lie to investors.
She had watched him pretend everything was fine when his father was dying.
She had watched him hide fear behind silence.
And now she saw the same expression.
"You know that voice," Claire said.
Grant did not answer.
Vanessa stared at him.
Claire felt something inside her break.
"Grant."
He finally looked at her.
Claire held up the tablet.
"Tell me why someone is building a custody file on Lily."
Grant opened his mouth.
Before he could speak, the tablet vibrated.
A notification appeared.
REMOTE ERASE REQUESTED.
Vanessa moved.
Claire moved faster.
She switched the device to airplane mode.
The notification disappeared.
Vanessa's face went completely white.
Grant whispered, "Claire, take Lily and go."
Claire stared at him.
"What?"
"Take her."
"Why?"
Grant looked toward the front windows as if expecting someone to appear outside.
May you like
Then he said the one thing Claire never expected.
"Because Vanessa isn't the only person you need to be afraid of."
