Chapter 5 - The File Marked Unstable

Thomas Vale's death had officially been an accident.
A boating accident on Lake George.
He had been twenty-nine.
His body had been recovered two days later.
Claire remembered the story because Grant had attended the funeral.
Richard Vale and Grant's father had been business partners for decades.
Their families had vacationed together.
Grant and Thomas had grown up like cousins.
Claire stared at Chloe's DNA report.
"If Thomas died six years ago and Chloe is five..."
"Vanessa would have been pregnant when he died," Maya said later that afternoon.
Ortiz had taken the evidence box.
Maya had come to Claire's apartment.
Grant remained at the police station answering questions.
Claire sat at the table.
"Did Grant know Vanessa back then?"
"No."
"Are you sure?"
"He says no."
Maya raised an eyebrow.
Claire sighed.
"I know."
They had reached the point where every answer generated another question.
Maya opened her laptop.
"I obtained a copy of the original trust from the firm that drafted your father's estate documents."
Claire leaned forward.
"Not Vale's firm?"
"No. Your father used a Boston attorney for the original version."
"And the amendment?"
"That's the problem."
Claire felt dread.
"What problem?"
"The amendment naming Evelyn as third trustee was prepared later."
"By who?"
"Richard Vale."
Claire closed her eyes.
Of course.
"When?"
"Nine days before your father's death."
Claire looked up.
"My father was in intensive care nine days before he died."
"I know."
"He was sedated."
"I know."
"He couldn't sign legal documents."
"That's exactly what we're investigating."
Claire stood and walked toward the window.
The city beyond the glass looked absurdly normal.
People crossed streets.
Cars stopped at lights.
Somewhere, someone was buying groceries.
Meanwhile the last several years of Claire's life were being rearranged by documents she had never known existed.
"Was the amendment notarized?"
"Yes."
"By who?"
Maya turned the page.
Claire read the name.
Evelyn Bennett.
"She notarized a document that gave herself control?"
"That's what it appears to say."
"Is that legal?"
"Not if the signature was forged."
Claire turned.
"Was it?"
"We need an expert."
Claire thought of her father.
Michael Sullivan had been difficult, loud and stubborn.
But he had adored Lily.
He would never have deliberately given Evelyn Bennett control of anything.
Especially his company.
"There has to be more."
"There is."
Maya opened another file.
"Your father's company wasn't worth four hundred million when he died."
"I know."
"It was worth about eighty."
Claire nodded.
"Then he died, the company expanded."
"Correct."
"And three months after his death, Bennett Capital invested in it."
Claire frowned.
"Grant's family company."
"Yes."
Claire looked at the transaction.
Bennett Capital had purchased a minority stake.
Evelyn had been chairwoman at the time.
Maya said, "Your father left Lily a large portion of his remaining shares. If Claire controls Lily's voting interest until twenty-five, then Claire holds enormous influence over Bennett Urban Holdings."
"I don't want control of the company."
"That doesn't matter."
"To Evelyn it does."
"Exactly."
Claire sat slowly.
"She wasn't trying to take Lily."
Maya's expression hardened.
"She was trying to take your voting rights by taking Lily."
The cruelty of it settled heavily.
Lily had never been a child to them.
She had been leverage.
Claire's phone buzzed.
A message from Grant.
Police found Vanessa.
Claire stood.
WHERE?
Grant replied.
Hotel in Stamford. She was arrested twenty minutes ago.
Claire exhaled.
For the first time all day, the tension in her shoulders eased.
Then another message arrived.
She had the second phone.
Claire called Ortiz.
He answered immediately.
"We have her."
"And the phone?"
"We have that too."
"What's on it?"
"We're getting a warrant."
"Detective."
"I can't tell you something I don't know."
Claire forced herself to breathe.
"Will she be released?"
"Not tonight."
"What is she charged with?"
"At minimum, child endangerment and evidence tampering are being reviewed. More may follow."
Claire looked at Lily's bedroom door.
"Good."
Ortiz lowered his voice.
"Claire, Vanessa asked for a lawyer."
"Of course she did."
"She asked for Richard Vale."
Claire's heartbeat changed.
"Her husband's family attorney?"
"Apparently."
"Does Grant know?"
"He does now."
Claire hung up.
Maya was already calling someone.
Within twenty minutes they had more news.
Richard Vale had agreed to represent Vanessa.
Grant was furious.
Evelyn was unreachable.
And the black SUV Claire had seen outside the pediatrician's office belonged to a private security company contracted by Vale & Bennett.
Claire stared at Maya.
"They followed me."
"Possibly."
"Why?"
"To know where the tablet went?"
Claire walked to the cabinet and pulled out a glass.
For one moment she considered wine.
Then she remembered the folder labeled CLAIRE DRINKING.
She put the glass away.
Maya saw.
"You can have a drink in your own home."
"I know."
"But?"
"I don't want to give them one real thing they can twist."
Maya nodded.
"That's understandable."
The forensic tablet review continued overnight.
At nine the next morning, Owen called.
"I found the Mother Instability Timeline."
Claire braced herself.
It contained sixteen incidents.
Most were fabricated.
A photograph of Claire holding a wineglass at a Christmas party.
A video of her arguing with Grant during the final months of their marriage.
A police incident report from three years earlier when a neighbor mistakenly triggered Claire's home alarm.
A photograph of prescription sleeping medication issued after her father's death.
Each ordinary moment had been presented as evidence of instability.
But one entry stopped Claire.
INCIDENT 11 - CHILD ABANDONMENT.
"What is this?"
Owen opened the supporting video.
Claire recognized the location immediately.
A grocery store parking lot.
She had left Lily inside her locked car.
For forty-seven seconds.
Claire remembered.
Lily had dropped her stuffed rabbit in the cart return.
Claire had parked six spaces away.
The engine remained running.
Claire could see Lily the entire time.
Someone had recorded her from across the parking lot.
The edited file showed Claire walking away.
It stopped before she returned.
Claire whispered, "They've been following me for months."
Owen corrected her gently.
"Years."
He opened metadata from the oldest surveillance clip.
Two years and eight months.
Claire stared at the date.
That was before her divorce.
Before Vanessa.
Before Grant claimed he met Vanessa.
Before Thomas Vale's name meant anything.
"Who created the folder?" Claire asked.
Owen hesitated.
"I found the original account registration."
"Whose?"
"The email address is anonymized."
"Then why are you hesitating?"
"Because the recovery phone number isn't."
Claire felt her stomach tighten.
"Whose number?"
Owen read it.
Claire knew it.
She had called it hundreds of times during her marriage.
May you like
It belonged to Bennett Capital's executive office.
Evelyn Bennett's private line.
