Chapter 9 - the man who handled every secret)

Richard Bell had attended every important event in Daniel's life.
His baptism.
His high school graduation.
His wedding to Emily.
Lily's birth.
Emily's memorial.
Charles's funeral.
And that morning, he had sat in the third row waiting to watch Daniel marry Vanessa.
Now his phone went directly to voicemail.
Police reached his home at two twenty in the morning.
The doors were unlocked.
The house was empty.
His car remained in the garage.
His passport was gone.
Daniel stood in Bell's study while Ruiz searched the desk.
"Richard wrote Emily's will."
Ruiz looked up.
"He handled Lily's trust?"
"Everything."
"And your father's estate?"
"Yes."
"He understood the voting structure better than anyone."
Michael paced near the bookshelf.
"He also conducted Vanessa's background check."
Daniel turned.
The implication landed immediately.
Richard had controlled what Daniel learned about her.
Ruiz opened a locked cabinet.
Inside were files arranged by year.
One labeled EMILY MERCER.
Daniel approached.
The file contained a copy of the original crash investigation.
Photographs.
Vehicle records.
Insurance documents.
Then Ruiz found a sealed envelope.
It contained a toxicology report.
Not Emily's.
A man named Jacob Reese.
The report indicated sedatives in his system.
Date of death: the same night as Emily's crash.
Ruiz searched the name.
Jacob Reese had been reported missing three years earlier.
His last known job was as a valet at a private Mercer Heritage event.
Daniel stared at the document.
"Why is this in Emily's file?"
Ruiz turned to another page.
Vehicle identification.
Jacob Reese had owned a sedan identical in model and year to Emily's.
Michael stopped pacing.
"You think they switched cars?"
Ruiz's expression remained grim.
"Possibly."
Another document showed Emily's vehicle had been serviced two days before the crash.
Authorized by Mercer Security.
The signature at the bottom belonged to Richard Bell.
Daniel felt anger rising again.
"He arranged it."
"Evidence first," Ruiz said.
"He arranged the crash."
"We still need proof."
They found more.
A private medical transport invoice dated the morning after the accident.
Pickup location: North County Clinic.
Patient name: Jane Roe.
Destination redacted.
The invoice had been paid by Project Haven.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Emily survived the crash.
Someone took her.
The story authorities gave Daniel had been constructed around a real vehicle, a real fire, and another dead person.
Ruiz found a second file.
ARTHUR VALE.
Inside was a death certificate.
Boating accident.
No body recovered.
Same pattern.
Daniel looked at Michael.
"Arthur may be alive too."
Ruiz nodded.
"If Project Haven was used to make people disappear, death without bodies would be convenient."
Michael opened another cabinet.
Hundreds of legal files.
Some belonged to Mercer executives.
Others to people Daniel did not recognize.
Several were marked DECEASED.
Ruiz called for additional forensic teams.
Daniel walked toward a framed photograph on Richard's wall.
Charles Mercer and Richard stood at a golf tournament.
Behind them, barely visible, was a younger Arthur Vale.
All three men smiled.
Daniel turned away.
Then Michael said, "Daniel."
He held a document.
A marriage license application.
Daniel and Vanessa.
Prepared six weeks earlier.
Nothing unusual until Daniel saw an attached legal memorandum.
Upon marriage, Vanessa Hart will become eligible to exercise emergency custodial authority over the Lily Mercer Trust pursuant to clause 17 if Daniel Mercer is determined medically incapacitated.
Daniel read it again.
"Medically incapacitated?"
Ruiz looked over his shoulder.
"This suggests marriage was only step one."
Michael understood first.
"They planned to do something to Daniel."
Daniel remained silent.
The next paper answered how.
A confidential medical evaluation from a psychiatrist Daniel had never met.
It described him as emotionally unstable following prolonged grief.
Potentially delusional.
Potentially dangerous.
Prepared testimony stated Daniel had recently reported seeing his dead wife.
Ruiz looked at him.
"They were preparing to have you declared incompetent."
Daniel almost laughed.
"The wedding happened today. I saw Emily today."
"But this report was written two months ago."
They had predicted it.
Or planned it.
Daniel suddenly remembered conversations with Vanessa.
Questions about sleep.
Stress.
Whether he ever felt watched.
Whether grief made him imagine Emily was still present.
At the time, he thought she was being supportive.
She had been collecting material.
Or someone had instructed her to.
Michael sat heavily.
"If today's wedding had happened normally, Vanessa becomes your wife. Then Emily appears somewhere private. You tell people your dead wife is alive. Richard produces psychiatric records. You look unstable."
Ruiz finished the thought.
"Then something happens that makes you medically or legally incapacitated."
Daniel's voice was cold.
"And Vanessa takes temporary control of Lily's trust."
"Along with its voting rights."
Daniel looked at Richard Bell's empty chair.
"Where is he?"
Ruiz's phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed.
"What location?"
She listened.
"We're coming."
Daniel followed her.
"What happened?"
"Richard's car isn't the only vehicle registered to him."
Ruiz grabbed her coat.
"He owns a cabin near Lake Ashford."
"How far?"
"Forty minutes."
"And?"
"A traffic camera captured Vanessa riding in a vehicle heading toward it."
Daniel stopped.
"Alive?"
"At the time of the image."
"When?"
May you like
Ruiz looked directly at him.
"Twenty-seven minutes ago."
