Chapter 3 - the father who noticed she was missing)

At ten forty-two, Daniel realized Lily had disappeared.

The photographer was arranging Daniel, Michael, and several relatives near the chapel garden when Daniel looked toward the flower girls.

There were three.

There were supposed to be four.

"Where's Lily?"

Nora, the wedding coordinator, glanced around.

"She should be with the bridesmaids."

"You took her to Vanessa?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"About twenty minutes ago."

Daniel checked his phone.

No message.

"Did Vanessa say she was staying there?"

Nora's expression shifted.

"I left Lily outside the room. I was called away."

"You left her alone?"

"Only for a moment."

Daniel was already moving.

He crossed the courtyard.

The main bridal suite was empty except for two bridesmaids.

"Where's Vanessa?"

"Hair photos."

"Where's Lily?"

They looked at each other.

One shook her head.

"We haven't seen her."

Daniel's stomach tightened.

He called Lily's name in the hallway.

No answer.

He checked the lounge.

The upstairs sitting room.

The restroom near the chapel.

Nothing.

By the time he reached the central foyer, panic had started climbing into his chest.

Michael caught up with him.

"What's wrong?"

"Lily's missing."

"What?"

"She was supposed to be with Vanessa."

"I'll check outside."

Daniel ran toward the east wing.

The handheld wedding videographer accidentally captured him crossing the hall at full speed.

Later, that footage would become important.

At the time, nobody noticed the woman standing in the far background.

Gray dress.

Dark sunglasses.

Watching Daniel.

Then disappearing through a service door.

Daniel pushed open one set of double doors.

Storage room.

Another.

Empty salon.

At the end of the hallway he heard something.

A faint pounding.

"Daddy!"

Daniel froze.

"Lily?"

"Daddy!"

He ran.

The sound came from a secondary bridal dressing room that was normally used for rehearsal events.

Daniel tried the handle.

Locked.

"Lily!"

"I'm in here!"

Daniel stepped back and slammed his shoulder against the door.

It held.

Michael arrived.

"What happened?"

"She's inside."

"Key?"

"No time."

Together they hit the door.

The old interior latch tore loose.

The doors burst inward.

Lily sat on the marble floor amid rose petals.

Her hands covered her face.

Daniel saw the blood on her arm.

Everything inside him stopped.

Then he was beside her.

"Sweetheart, what happened?"

Lily looked up.

"The bride locked me in here. She hurt me really bad."

Daniel examined the scratches.

His breathing changed.

"She did this to you?"

Lily nodded.

Michael stared toward the doorway.

"Daniel."

But Daniel was already standing.

"Daddy, wait."

He stopped.

Lily opened her hand.

The silver locket lay in her palm.

Daniel's anger vanished beneath something colder.

"Where did you get this?"

"Vanessa had it."

Daniel took the necklace.

He turned it over.

On the back were three tiny engraved letters.

E D M.

Emily Diane Mercer.

Daniel's knees nearly failed.

Michael saw it.

"Oh my God."

Daniel opened the locket.

The hospital photo remained inside.

He remembered putting it there himself.

Then he found the folded note behind it.

Daniel, if you found this, don't trust Vanessa.

Dated three weeks earlier.

Michael read over his shoulder.

Neither man spoke.

Lily wiped her face.

"Is Mommy alive?"

Daniel could not answer.

His brain searched for explanations.

A forgery.

A cruel joke.

An old note with a false date.

But the handwriting was Emily's.

Daniel had seen it on birthday cards, grocery lists, legal documents, notes in Lily's lunchbox.

He knew every curve.

Every uneven capital D.

Every way Emily crossed her T slightly too high.

This was hers.

Or someone had studied her closely enough to make Daniel believe it was.

"Where's Vanessa?" Daniel asked.

Michael grabbed his arm.

"You need to think before you go in there."

"She locked my daughter in a room."

"I know."

"She hurt her."

"I know."

"She had Emily's necklace."

Michael lowered his voice.

"And that's exactly why you need to think."

Daniel looked at Lily.

The scratches were still bleeding.

Any instinct for caution disappeared.

He lifted his daughter.

"You're coming with me."

Michael stepped in front of him.

"Daniel."

"Move."

"Don't do something you can't undo."

Daniel's eyes hardened.

"She already did."

He walked toward the chapel.

Guests were beginning to gather.

Music filled the hall.

Nobody knew the ceremony had already ended before it began.

At the entrance, Daniel handed Lily to Michael.

"Stay with Uncle Mike."

"No."

"Lily."

"I'm coming."

"Lily."

The child stared at him.

"She lied about Mommy."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then he took her hand.

The enormous chapel doors opened.

Vanessa stood at the end of the aisle.

She smiled.

"Darling, where have you been?"

Daniel crossed the distance between them.

"How dare you hurt my daughter?"

Then came the slap.

The gasps.

The silence.

The locket.

The note.

Vanessa backing toward the side exit.

And Daniel shouting for the doors to be closed.

But Vanessa never reached the exit.

Because before anyone could stop her, another voice came from the back of the chapel.

"Daniel."

He turned.

A woman stood between the open doors.

She wore a gray dress.

Dark sunglasses.

Her face was pale.

She was visibly trembling.

Daniel stopped breathing.

For one impossible moment he thought he was looking at a ghost.

Then the woman removed her glasses.

Michael whispered one word.

"Emily?"

Lily screamed.

May you like

"Mommy!"

The woman turned and ran.
