Chapter 12 - arthur vale tells the truth)

Vanessa crossed the greenhouse as if she were afraid the man would disappear before she reached him.

Arthur Vale opened his arms.

She collapsed against him.

For several seconds he held his daughter while she cried.

Daniel watched in stunned silence.

Arthur was supposed to have died seventeen years earlier.

He looked older than seventy despite being only sixty-three.

His hands trembled.

A scar ran from his left temple toward his ear.

When Vanessa finally stepped back, she touched his face.

"They showed me you."

Arthur nodded.

"At the facility."

"Why didn't you tell me who you were?"

"I couldn't."

"You looked at me."

His eyes filled.

"I know."

"You let me believe you didn't recognize me."

Arthur looked away.

"I'm sorry."

Ruiz approached.

"Mr. Vale, I'm Detective Sofia Ruiz."

"I know."

"How?"

Arthur almost smiled.

"Because I've been watching the investigation."

Ruiz did not appreciate the answer.

"Then you know you're legally dead."

"So I've been told."

"You need to come with us."

"I will. But Daniel needs to hear this first."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Where is Emily?"

Arthur's expression became serious.

"Alive."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

Daniel's hope turned instantly to fury.

"You don't know?"

"She was moved after the wedding."

"By Richard?"

"Richard is only a courier."

"Then who?"

Arthur looked toward the greenhouse entrance.

Even now he seemed afraid of being overheard.

"We called them the Circle."

Daniel remembered Emily's symbol.

A black circle crossed by three vertical lines.

Arthur continued.

"Project Haven began during the Cold War as a private cooperation network between several wealthy industrial families and government contractors. Originally it protected executives and witnesses facing kidnapping or retaliation."

"What happened?"

"Money."

Arthur gave a bitter smile.

"Money happens to everything."

By the time Charles inherited Mercer Heritage, Haven had changed.

People were no longer hidden only for protection.

Some were removed because they knew too much.

Some because their deaths moved assets.

Some because their identities were useful.

"Charles tried to leave," Arthur said.

Daniel stared.

"My father?"

"Twice."

"Emily thought he was part of it."

"He was."

Arthur did not excuse him.

"Charles authorized terrible things. But by the time he understood how far Haven had gone, Daniel and Michael were adults. You were leverage."

"Then why not tell us?"

"Because telling you would have made you targets."

Daniel laughed without humor.

"We became targets anyway."

"Yes."

Arthur looked ashamed.

Ruiz asked, "Why was Emily taken?"

"She found financial routes connecting Haven to Mercer Heritage. Charles tried to scare her away from investigating. Richard decided fear wasn't enough."

"Richard caused the crash?"

Arthur nodded.

"He ordered Emily's car altered. But Charles learned about it too late and arranged for Emily to be removed from the vehicle before it went over the ravine."

Daniel froze.

"My father saved her?"

"In a manner of speaking."

"Then why didn't he bring her home?"

"Because Richard already knew Charles had interfered. If Emily reappeared, Daniel, you and Lily would have been next."

"So Dad hid her."

"For the first few months."

"Where?"

"Different Haven properties."

Daniel shook his head.

"He used the system that tried to kill her to hide her."

Arthur nodded.

"That was Charles. He believed every prison could become a fortress if you controlled the locks."

"What changed?"

"Richard discovered Emily was collecting evidence from inside the network."

"Then?"

"Charles lost control of her transfers. For almost two years, he didn't know exactly where she was."

Daniel remembered his father's final year.

Charles became withdrawn.

Obsessive about security.

Daniel assumed grief and age were affecting him.

"Did he die naturally?"

Arthur was silent.

Daniel's face hardened.

"Did he?"

"No."

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Arthur continued.

"Charles was preparing to give you the registry. Richard found out."

"How was he killed?"

"A medication interaction designed to resemble cardiac arrest."

Daniel turned away.

His father had committed crimes.

Hidden truths.

Controlled lives.

But he had also died trying to stop the machine he helped maintain.

The contradiction hurt more than simple hatred would have.

Ruiz asked, "Where is the registry?"

Arthur looked toward the blue bird music box.

"Charles moved it."

"Where?"

"He told me only one clue before he died."

Daniel waited.

Arthur repeated it.

"The place where Daniel first learned his father could lie."

Daniel frowned.

He searched his memory.

Then stopped.

Age twelve.

Mercer family summer house.

Daniel had found Charles meeting a woman late at night.

Charles claimed she was a business associate.

Years later Daniel learned she was not.

Michael had been there too.

"The lake house."

Arthur nodded.

Police searched it that afternoon.

Behind a false wall in Charles's old study, they found a steel case.

Inside was the registry.

Thousands of names.

Financial records.

Haven locations.

Handlers.

Victims.

Sponsors.

It was enough to destroy careers, companies, perhaps entire family dynasties.

Ruiz looked at Daniel.

"This is bigger than anything I can keep inside a local investigation."

Daniel understood.

Federal agencies would become involved.

Media.

Courts.

Lawyers.

For the first time since the wedding, he felt something close to victory.

They had the evidence.

They could expose the network.

They could force whoever held Emily to release her.

Vanessa sat beside Arthur.

Lily would be safe.

Richard could be hunted.

The Mercer family secrets would finally come into daylight.

Then the forensic analyst reviewing the registry called Ruiz.

Her face changed as she read the screen.

"What?"

Daniel approached.

Ruiz turned the laptop.

The registry contained a list labeled ACTIVE SUBJECTS.

Emily Mercer appeared there.

Status: CONTROLLED.

Vanessa Hart.

Status: EMBEDDED.

Arthur Vale.

Status: LOST.

Charles Mercer.

Status: TERMINATED.

Then Daniel's name.

Status: SUCCESSOR.

And Lily's.

Status: PRIMARY.

Daniel stared at the word.

"What does primary mean?"

Arthur's face went white.

"I've never seen that designation."

Ruiz scrolled.

Beside Lily's name was a scheduled date.

May you like

Tomorrow.

At seven thirty in the morning.
