Chapter 4 - the woman at the chapel door)

Daniel chased her without thinking.

Guests scattered as he ran back down the aisle.

The woman had already crossed the marble foyer.

"Emily!"

She did not stop.

"Emily!"

She pushed through a side door leading toward the gardens.

Daniel followed.

Bright sunlight blinded him for an instant.

When his vision adjusted, she was gone.

Only a service gate moved slowly in the breeze.

Daniel ran toward it.

Beyond the gate was a narrow road used by vendors.

A black sedan accelerated away.

Daniel reached the road too late.

He caught only three numbers from the license plate.

Michael reached him seconds later.

"Was it her?"

Daniel stared at the disappearing car.

"I don't know."

"You saw her face."

"I know what I saw."

"Then was it Emily?"

Daniel turned.

His face looked broken.

"Yes."

Michael said nothing.

Daniel looked back toward the chapel.

"Or somebody who looks exactly like her."

Behind them came the sound of shouting.

They returned inside.

The wedding hall had descended into chaos.

Guests were gathering near the altar.

Vanessa was gone.

"Where is she?" Daniel demanded.

Nora approached.

"She left through the preparation corridor."

"You closed the exits."

"Someone opened the kitchen door."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Daniel looked toward the security cameras mounted above the hallway.

"Get me every recording from this building."

A hand touched his jacket.

Lily.

Daniel dropped to his knees.

"Did you see her?"

Lily nodded so quickly her hair moved around her face.

"That was Mommy."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"You haven't seen her in three years."

"That was Mommy."

Daniel looked into his daughter's eyes.

Children could confuse memories.

Adults could too.

But Lily's certainty frightened him.

"She looked at me," Lily whispered.

Daniel's chest tightened.

"What?"

"When the doors opened. Mommy looked at me."

"Why did she run?"

Lily shook her head.

Daniel pulled her close.

"I don't know either."

Police arrived twelve minutes later.

By then Vanessa's phone was disconnected.

Her car remained parked outside.

Her suitcase was gone from the bridal suite.

Detective Sofia Ruiz took control of the chapel.

She was forty-one, calm, observant, and unimpressed by wealth.

Her first reaction to Daniel's story was careful skepticism.

"Your deceased wife appeared at your wedding?"

"I'm aware of how it sounds."

"And the bride disappeared?"

"Yes."

"After assaulting your daughter?"

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Yes."

Ruiz looked at Lily's forearm.

A paramedic had cleaned the scratches and wrapped them loosely.

"Those injuries look consistent with a sharp piece of jewelry or fingernails."

"Vanessa wore a diamond bracelet."

"Did anyone see what happened?"

"Lily."

"I'll speak to her with a child specialist."

Daniel leaned forward.

"Detective, my daughter isn't confused."

"I didn't say she was."

"You looked at me like she imagined Emily."

Ruiz held his gaze.

"I'm looking at you like a detective who has heard three extraordinary claims in ten minutes."

Michael handed her the locket.

Ruiz studied the engraving.

"And this belonged to your wife?"

"Yes."

"Last seen?"

"Before her accident."

"Recovered afterward?"

"No."

"Could Vanessa have gotten it from the crash site?"

Daniel stared at her.

"I don't know."

Ruiz unfolded the note using gloves.

"Three weeks ago."

"That's Emily's handwriting."

"You're certain?"

"I was married to her for eight years."

"We'll verify it."

Daniel watched her place the note into an evidence sleeve.

"Detective."

Ruiz looked up.

"If Emily is alive, somebody has known for three years."

Ruiz's expression did not change.

"That would be my concern too."

The chapel security system contained twelve cameras.

Eleven had recorded normally.

The camera facing the rear entrance had gone offline exactly ninety seconds before the woman appeared.

It came back online forty seconds after she ran.

Ruiz stared at the timeline.

"Coincidence?"

The security manager swallowed.

"I don't think so."

The camera covering the kitchen exit had also stopped.

Two cameras.

Same ninety-second window.

Ruiz turned to Daniel.

"Someone planned this."

They reviewed the wedding videographer's footage.

At ten thirty-eight, Daniel could be seen walking toward the chapel garden.

In the background stood the same gray-dressed woman.

She watched him.

Then looked directly toward the camera.

Daniel gripped the edge of the table.

Ruiz paused the image.

The resolution was high.

The face was unmistakable.

Emily Mercer.

Older.

Thinner.

But Emily.

Michael sat down.

"She's alive."

Daniel could not respond.

Ruiz zoomed in.

There was something unusual near Emily's left ear.

A bruise.

Faint purple.

Recent.

Then another figure appeared behind her.

A man in a dark suit.

His face remained outside the frame.

Emily saw him.

Her posture changed instantly.

Fear.

She walked away.

Ruiz replayed the sequence.

"She's not alone."

Daniel looked at her.

"You think she was being followed?"

"I think she saw somebody she didn't want to see."

Michael pointed toward the corner.

"Can you see his hand?"

Ruiz zoomed again.

The man wore a ring.

Gold.

Large.

An engraved crest occupied the center.

Daniel stared.

He recognized that crest.

He had seen it every Christmas since childhood.

Michael slowly turned toward him.

"No."

Daniel's voice was quiet.

"Yes."

The ring belonged to one family.

The Mercers.

And only three men had ever worn it.

Daniel.

Michael.

And their father.

May you like

Charles Mercer.

A man who had died eighteen months earlier.
