Chapter 13 - the day they came for lily)

Police relocated Lily before sunset.

Nobody outside the immediate investigative team knew where.

Daniel refused to leave her.

He sat beside her bed while she slept, watching every movement beyond the apartment window.

At six fifty the next morning, nothing happened.

At seven ten, nothing.

At seven twenty-five, Ruiz called.

"Stay inside."

Daniel stood.

"What's happening?"

"We intercepted unusual traffic near three Mercer properties."

"How many people?"

"We don't know."

"Is this location compromised?"

"No indication."

At seven twenty-nine, the apartment lights went out.

Daniel's heart stopped.

Emergency power activated seconds later.

An alarm sounded.

Police filled the hallway.

Lily woke.

"Daddy?"

Daniel lifted her.

"I've got you."

Ruiz's voice came through his phone.

"Daniel, do not leave the apartment."

A loud impact came from downstairs.

Then another.

Gunfire.

Lily screamed.

Daniel carried her into the protected interior room.

Michael was already there.

"What happened?"

"I don't know."

Police officers locked the reinforced door.

For ninety seconds, Daniel heard chaos.

Then silence.

Ruiz called again.

"We're secure."

"What was it?"

"Not an assault."

Daniel frowned.

"Then what?"

"A delivery truck hit the power junction outside. Driver fled."

"Coincidence?"

"No."

"What did they want?"

Ruiz hesitated.

"Check Lily."

Daniel looked at his daughter.

"What?"

"Her dress. Shoes. Anything she kept from the wedding."

Daniel remembered the torn paper.

The locket had been taken as evidence.

The flower-girl dress remained with Lily because she refused to give it up immediately.

Michael retrieved it from the closet.

Daniel searched the fabric.

Inside the flower basket pocket was something nobody had noticed.

A small black device.

Tracking transmitter.

Daniel's blood ran cold.

"They've known where she was."

"Maybe not," Ruiz said. "The device hasn't transmitted since the wedding."

"Then why the power outage?"

"To activate it."

The transmitter used a dormant signal triggered remotely under specific network conditions.

The attackers had not been trying to enter the building.

They were trying to wake the tracker.

Ruiz ordered immediate evacuation.

They moved through an underground parking garage.

Lily clung to Daniel.

As the convoy departed, Daniel's phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Text message.

YOU HAVE SOMETHING THAT BELONGS TO US.

Another message.

RETURN THE REGISTRY.

Daniel looked at Ruiz.

"Don't respond."

A third message arrived.

Photograph.

Emily.

Alive.

She sat in a chair holding today's newspaper.

A man stood behind her.

Only his torso was visible.

Daniel enlarged the image.

On the man's hand was the Mercer crest ring.

Arthur's ring.

"Richard."

Ruiz shook her head.

"Maybe."

Message four.

THE REGISTRY FOR EMILY.

Daniel's hands trembled.

Lily looked up.

"Is that Mommy?"

He locked the screen.

"No."

She had already seen.

"It is."

Daniel could not answer.

Another message.

NO POLICE.

MIDNIGHT.

OLD ST. JUDE STATION.

Ruiz read it.

"They expect you to trade."

"I will."

"No."

"They have my wife."

"You don't know who has her."

"I don't care."

"You should."

Daniel turned angrily.

"Three years."

"I know."

"No, you don't. Three years I told my daughter her mother was dead. Three years I woke up thinking the last thing Emily remembered was me shouting at her. I am not leaving her there because some file matters more."

Ruiz held his gaze.

"If you take the only copy, everyone in Haven who wants that evidence destroyed will converge on the station."

"Good."

"What?"

Daniel's expression changed.

"Maybe that's how we end it."

By evening a plan formed.

Police would create a duplicate drive.

Federal investigators, now quietly involved, would secure the original registry.

Daniel would take the copy to St. Jude Station.

No visible police.

But tactical teams would surround the abandoned rail terminal from a distance.

Vanessa insisted on going.

Daniel refused.

"They used me to get close to you. Richard trusts that I'm afraid of him."

"You are."

"Yes."

She looked at him.

"That's why he'll believe me."

Daniel thought of Lily's arm.

"I haven't forgiven you."

"I didn't ask you to."

"You locked my daughter in a room."

"I know."

"You could have stopped this sooner."

"I know."

"And if you betray us tonight..."

Vanessa's eyes met his.

"You won't need to finish that sentence."

Arthur provided another complication.

"The registry isn't their only concern."

"What else?"

"There is a master authentication code."

"For what?"

"Haven's financial network."

"Where?"

Arthur looked toward Lily.

Daniel instantly understood.

"No."

"Emily may have hidden it with her."

"She was three."

"Which made her invisible."

Daniel shook his head.

"My daughter is not part of this."

Arthur's voice softened.

"She became part of it the moment Emily discovered the truth."

At eleven forty, Daniel prepared to leave.

Lily stood near the doorway in pajamas.

"You're going to get Mommy?"

Daniel crouched.

"I'm going to try."

"Bring her home."

He hugged her.

"I will."

Lily whispered, "Daddy?"

"Yeah?"

"Mommy told me a number."

Daniel pulled back.

"When?"

"Before she went away."

His heart pounded.

"What number?"

Lily thought carefully.

"She said if I ever saw the blue bird again, I should remember seven, one, nine, four."

Arthur stared.

"7194."

His face changed.

"What?"

Arthur stepped backward.

"That's not an authentication code."

"Then what is it?"

Arthur looked frightened.

"It's a Haven subject number."

Daniel felt the room become cold.

"Whose?"

Arthur shook his head.

"I don't remember."

Ruiz opened the registry database.

She searched 7194.

One result.

Subject 7194.

Name restricted.

Status: ACTIVE.

Relationship: MERCER FAMILY.

Daniel stared at the screen.

The person's identity could be unlocked only with Charles Mercer's private access key.

A key nobody possessed.

Then Lily spoke from behind them.

"I know the name."

Everyone turned.

Daniel crouched.

"What name?"

Lily looked confused by their reactions.

"Mommy made me say it after the number."

Daniel swallowed.

"What did she make you say?"

Lily answered.

"Samuel."

Michael dropped the glass he was holding.

Daniel turned toward him.

Michael's face had become completely white.

"Who is Samuel?" Ruiz asked.

Neither brother answered immediately.

Then Michael whispered.

"Our brother."

May you like

Daniel stared at Lily.

"Our brother died when he was a baby."
