Chapter 15 - the man who knew lily before she was born)

By sunrise, Richard Bell was in federal custody.
Vanessa was hospitalized under guard.
Arthur Vale entered protective detention voluntarily.
The Haven registry had been copied into multiple secure systems.
Search warrants were being prepared across five states.
For the first time in decades, the machinery behind Project Haven was being dragged into daylight.
And Emily came home.
Not to the Mercer Estate.
Daniel refused to return there.
They met Lily inside a protected residence.
Daniel entered first.
Lily ran toward him.
"Did you find her?"
He stepped aside.
Emily stood in the doorway.
For one second Lily did not move.
The three years between them seemed enormous.
Emily knelt.
"Lily."
Her voice broke.
Lily stared.
Then ran.
"Mommy!"
Emily caught her.
They fell to the carpet together.
Emily cried into her daughter's hair.
Lily wrapped both arms around her neck.
"You came back."
"I'm sorry."
"I knew you weren't dead."
Emily held her tighter.
Daniel turned away because watching hurt too much.
Not bad hurt.
The kind of hurt created when something impossible finally becomes real.
For several hours, nothing else mattered.
Lily showed Emily drawings.
Her school photographs.
The missing tooth she kept in a small box because she refused to let the tooth fairy take it.
Emily listened to everything.
Daniel watched them from across the room.
This was what he had wanted for three years.
It should have felt like the end.
Instead, he knew it was only the end of one part.
Later, when Lily finally slept between them on the sofa, Daniel looked at Emily.
"Samuel."
Emily closed her eyes.
"Daniel."
"You said not at the station."
"I know."
"We have Lily now."
Emily looked toward their daughter.
"She shouldn't hear this."
They moved into the kitchen.
Daniel kept his voice low.
"Start from the beginning."
Emily sat at the table.
"When I found the Haven records, I saw Samuel's number."
"Our brother."
"Yes."
"He's alive?"
Emily hesitated.
"I believe so."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"Why did you teach Lily his number?"
"Because Charles told me Samuel was the only person Richard could never fully control."
Daniel stared.
"My father told you?"
"Two days before the crash."
Emily explained that Charles finally admitted Samuel had not died as a baby.
There had been a kidnapping threat connected to the early Haven network.
Charles and Margaret were told Samuel would never be safe as a Mercer.
Haven arranged a new identity.
The death was staged.
The child was relocated.
Charles claimed even he did not know where Samuel went.
"Did he believe that?" Daniel asked.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because years later Charles discovered someone had altered Samuel's record. His access level changed."
"To higher than Dad's."
Emily nodded.
"Charles started to suspect Samuel wasn't just relocated. He had been raised inside Haven."
Daniel felt cold.
"Raised by them?"
"Possibly."
"To do what?"
"I don't know."
Daniel thought of Richard's final confidence.
The registry is obsolete.
"Richard said Samuel knows who Lily is."
Emily's hands trembled.
"That's the part I never understood."
"What does it mean?"
Emily stood and walked toward the window.
"When Lily was born, Charles became terrified."
"Of his granddaughter?"
"Not of her. For her."
"Why?"
"Something happened at the hospital."
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
"Her newborn bloodwork disappeared."
"What are you talking about?"
"Records were removed. A nurse was fired. Charles hired private security before we even brought Lily home."
Daniel remembered.
His father had insisted on guards.
Daniel thought it was typical Mercer paranoia.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't understand then."
"What did Dad think?"
"That Haven had been waiting for a Mercer child from your branch of the family."
Daniel stared.
"For what?"
Emily shook her head.
"I never learned."
A phone rang in the other room.
Not Daniel's.
Not Emily's.
They both turned.
The sound came from Lily's flower basket.
The same basket police had searched.
Daniel approached carefully.
Inside, beneath the woven base, a tiny disposable phone vibrated.
No caller ID.
Daniel looked at Emily.
She became pale.
"Don't answer."
He did.
Silence.
Then a man's voice.
Calm.
Deep.
"Daniel Mercer."
"Who is this?"
"You have something that belongs to me."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"The registry?"
The man laughed quietly.
"No."
Daniel looked toward the living room where Lily slept.
"What do you want?"
"My niece."
Every muscle in Daniel's body tightened.
Emily gripped the counter.
Daniel's voice lowered.
"Samuel?"
Silence.
Then the man spoke again.
"Charles always said you were slower than Michael."
Daniel's blood ran cold.
"Where are you?"
"Closer than you think."
"What do you want with Lily?"
"That depends on what Emily has told you."
Daniel looked at his wife.
Emily was shaking.
"What is Lily?"
The question escaped before he could stop it.
The man did not answer immediately.
Then he said something Daniel would remember for the rest of his life.
"Lily isn't the reason Haven survived."
A pause.
"She's the reason it was created."
The line disconnected.
Daniel stared at the phone.
Emily covered her mouth.
From the living room came Lily's sleepy voice.
"Mommy?"
Emily immediately went to her.
Daniel remained in the kitchen.
The disposable phone vibrated one final time.
A photograph appeared.
It showed the protected residence.
Taken from outside.
Taken within the last minute.
Daniel ran to the window.
Nothing.
Only a quiet street and early morning sunlight.
Then he looked at the photograph again.
In the reflection of the residence window, the photographer's face could barely be seen.
Daniel enlarged it.
Dark hair.
Strong jaw.
Eyes disturbingly similar to his own.
A man who looked enough like Charles Mercer to be family.
Beneath the photograph was a message.
HELLO, LITTLE BROTHER.
Daniel looked toward Emily and Lily.
Federal agents were outside.
Richard was imprisoned.
The registry was secure.
Vanessa had confessed.
Arthur was alive.
Emily was finally home.
The wedding conspiracy had failed.
But somewhere beyond the windows stood the brother Daniel had been taught to mourn before he was old enough to remember him.
A brother connected to the beginning of Project Haven.
A brother who knew Lily.
And judging by the photograph on Daniel's phone, Samuel Mercer had already found them.
Daniel slowly closed the curtains.
Behind him, Lily asked her mother a question.
"Mommy, who was Uncle Samuel?"
Emily stopped moving.
Daniel turned.
Neither parent had ever spoken that name in front of her.
"Lily," Daniel said quietly, "how do you know that name?"
The little girl looked confused.
Then she pointed toward the hallway.
"The man told me."
Daniel's heart stopped.
"What man?"
Lily pointed toward the partially open bedroom door.
"The man who was standing there while you were talking."
Daniel ran toward the hallway.
The bedroom was empty.
The window stood open.
On the floor beneath it lay a small black envelope.
Daniel picked it up.
Inside was an old photograph.
Three boys stood beside Charles Mercer.
Michael.
Daniel.
And a third boy Daniel had never seen.
On the back was a handwritten sentence.
You were never told which Mercer child was Samuel.
Daniel stared at the words.
Then at the photograph.
Because the oldest boy in the picture was not the stranger.
It was Michael.
And the boy standing beside young Daniel had a face Daniel recognized from somewhere else.
Somewhere recent.
Somewhere impossible.
Before Daniel could place it, Emily whispered from behind him.
"Oh my God."
Daniel turned.
Emily was staring at the third boy.
She knew him.
"Who is that?"
Emily did not answer.
Her face had gone white.
Daniel stepped toward her.
"Emily. Who is he?"
Outside, a car engine started.
Daniel rushed to the window.
A black sedan moved away from the curb.
Too quickly for him to see the driver.
But someone in the rear seat lifted one hand toward the glass.
A gold ring flashed in the morning sunlight.
Not the Mercer family crest.
A black circle crossed by three vertical lines.
The original symbol of Haven.
Daniel watched the car disappear.
Behind him, Emily finally spoke.
But her words were so quiet he almost did not hear them.
"Daniel, that boy isn't Samuel."
Daniel turned.
"Then who is he?"
Emily looked toward sleeping Lily.
Then back at the photograph.
Her eyes filled with fear.
"He's the reason your father spent thirty years pretending Samuel was dead."
Daniel waited.
Emily opened her mouth.
May you like
Before she could say the name, every phone inside the house began ringing at once.
And somewhere beneath the floor, a hidden lock clicked open.
