Chapter 6 - the road where emily died)

By late afternoon, the wedding estate no longer resembled a place built for celebration.

Police vehicles lined the driveway.

Guests had been sent home.

Flowers remained untouched.

Champagne warmed inside silver buckets.

The wedding cake stood beneath crystal lights nobody had turned off.

Daniel changed out of his tuxedo and drove north with Detective Ruiz.

Michael stayed with Lily at a secure hotel under police protection.

Daniel hated leaving his daughter.

But he hated doing nothing more.

The highway curved into the mountains.

Every mile brought back memories.

Three years earlier, police had called him at two seventeen in the morning.

Emily's car had been found below Route 16.

She had supposedly been driving to her sister's home after an argument with Daniel.

That detail haunted him most.

Their final conversation had been angry.

Emily wanted Daniel to leave Mercer Heritage.

Daniel refused.

She accused his father of controlling him.

Daniel accused her of trying to destroy his relationship with his family.

She left.

Hours later, her car crashed.

Daniel spent years believing their final words had been cruel.

Now he wondered whether the argument had been engineered.

"Tell me about the night she disappeared," Ruiz said.

Daniel watched pine trees pass outside the window.

"We argued."

"About your father?"

"Yes."

"What specifically?"

"Emily found documents in my office."

"What kind?"

"I never saw them."

"Why?"

"She said she moved them somewhere safe."

Ruiz glanced at him.

"What did she claim they showed?"

Daniel tried to remember.

"Offshore accounts. Payments to security contractors. She thought Dad was hiding assets."

"Did she mention names?"

"One."

"Who?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Arthur Vale."

Ruiz's hands tightened on the steering wheel.

"Vale?"

"Yes."

"As in Vanessa Hart's mother's maiden name?"

Daniel turned.

"What?"

Ruiz had investigated Vanessa's background that afternoon.

Vanessa Hart had been born Vanessa Vale.

Her father, Arthur Vale, died when she was fourteen.

At least according to public records.

Daniel stared ahead.

"I never knew."

"Vanessa told you nothing about her father?"

"She said he was an accountant who died when she was young."

"According to corporate records, Arthur Vale served as financial controller for Mercer Heritage for eleven years."

Daniel felt cold.

"My father knew Vanessa's father."

"Very well, apparently."

"Why didn't her background check show this?"

Ruiz looked at him.

"You ran a background check on your fiancée?"

"My security team did."

"And who runs your security team?"

Daniel answered slowly.

"A company my father selected."

The connection hung between them.

They reached the pay phone near dusk.

It stood outside a closed mountain convenience store.

No cameras.

No witnesses.

Ruiz examined the area.

A discarded paper coffee cup sat near the curb.

A technician collected it.

Daniel walked toward the guardrail across the road.

From there he could see the ravine.

Three years earlier, investigators found Emily's vehicle below.

He remembered standing in almost the same place while rain covered his coat.

Ruiz joined him.

"The crash report says there were no skid marks."

"I know."

"Meaning the car left the road without braking."

Daniel nodded.

"The investigators believed she fell asleep."

"At thirty-three years old, twenty minutes after leaving home?"

"That's what they said."

Ruiz looked down the ravine.

"Did anyone investigate mechanical failure?"

"My father's insurance investigators did."

"And what did they find?"

"Nothing."

Ruiz gave him a look.

Daniel understood.

Another investigation controlled by Charles.

A patrol officer arrived carrying an evidence bag.

They had found something inside the pay phone booth.

A small brass key taped beneath the metal shelf.

Attached was a paper tag.

D.M.

Daniel recognized Emily's handwriting again.

Ruiz photographed it before giving it to an evidence technician.

"What does it open?"

Daniel stared at the key.

"I don't know."

Ruiz looked around.

"Maybe she expected you to."

Then Daniel remembered.

Six weeks before Emily disappeared, she had rented a storage locker.

She told him it contained old furniture from her mother's home.

Daniel had never visited it.

After her disappearance, he searched her records but found no active lease.

"What?"

Ruiz saw his face.

"Emily had a storage unit."

"Where?"

"Northbridge."

"That's thirty minutes from here."

They drove there immediately.

Northbridge Storage had changed owners twice in three years.

The current manager searched archived records.

No Emily Mercer.

No Emily Parker.

Daniel was about to leave when Ruiz asked to search under initials.

The manager found one.

E.D.M.

Unit 314.

Prepaid for five years in cash.

Daniel's heart began pounding.

The brass key opened it.

Inside was almost nothing.

A metal desk.

Three cardboard boxes.

A small safe.

And a framed photograph of Daniel and Lily.

Daniel approached the desk.

On top was a white envelope.

His name was written on it.

He opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then either I failed to come home or somebody finally decided you deserved the truth.

Your father is hiding something inside Mercer Heritage.

But Charles is not the person I fear most.

There is someone above him.

Someone he obeys.

I do not know the name.

I only know the symbol.

A black circle crossed by three vertical lines.

Arthur Vale found it first.

He tried to expose them.

They destroyed him.

If anything happens to me, protect Lily.

Do not trust anyone who tells you my disappearance was an accident.

And Daniel, if I ever have to leave you, understand this.

I would never leave because I stopped loving you.

Emily

Daniel lowered the letter.

For three years he had believed Emily died angry with him.

Now he knew her final preparations had been made to protect him.

Ruiz opened one of the boxes.

Financial documents.

Photographs.

Names.

Dates.

The second box contained surveillance images of Charles meeting unidentified men.

The third contained files on Arthur Vale.

Vanessa's father.

Daniel moved toward the safe.

The brass key did not fit.

Ruiz examined the keypad.

Four digits.

Daniel tried Lily's birthday.

Nothing.

Their wedding anniversary.

Nothing.

Emily's birthday.

Nothing.

Then he remembered something Lily used to say.

Mommy's lucky number.

317.

March seventeenth.

The day Daniel and Emily first met.

The safe clicked.

Inside was a flash drive.

A passport.

Fifty thousand dollars in cash.

And another photograph.

Daniel picked it up.

Emily stood outside a motel.

The photograph had been taken after her supposed death.

A date stamp appeared in the corner.

May you like

Four months after the crash.

Beside Emily stood Vanessa.
