Chapter 9 - One Flame Must Die

The operating platform rose from the floor.

Mechanical arms moved above Claire and Cassandra, each carrying needles, scanners, and surgical blades.

Marcus fired at the control panel.

The bullets ricocheted harmlessly.

Crowe struck the emergency switch with his cane.

Nothing happened.

Gabriel shouted from the locked room.

"The system predicts resistance. Stop behaving predictably."

Claire stopped fighting.

Cassandra stared at her.

"What are you doing?"

"Giving it what it wants."

The mechanical arms paused.

Claire relaxed her shoulders.

The restraint around her wrist loosened slightly to adjust her position.

She dislocated her thumb and pulled her hand free.

Cassandra winced.

Claire seized a surgical instrument and cut the cable around her legs.

The machine moved toward her.

She threw the blade into the main sensor.

The lights flashed.

Marcus tore open the side panel and ripped out several circuits.

Cassandra broke one restraint and kicked the mechanical arm away.

Within seconds, both sisters were free.

The Phoenix emblem disappeared from the screens.

A new message appeared.

ADAPTATION NOTED.

Cassandra looked at Claire.

"It is studying us."

"It has been studying us since birth."

Gabriel's implanted device continued flashing.

Marcus inspected the connection.

"We have less than three minutes before the transmission completes."

Claire entered Gabriel's room.

"You said removing it would transfer control to Cassandra."

"Yes."

"What happens if you die?"

Gabriel's eyes remained steady.

"It transfers faster."

Cassandra joined them.

"What if both keys reject it?"

Gabriel shook his head.

"The program does not recognize rejection."

"Programs can be rewritten," Claire said.

"Not this one."

Claire looked at Marcus.

"Connect my phone directly to the implant."

"That could give Phoenix access to every system you carry."

"It already has access."

Marcus obeyed.

Claire opened the hidden app.

PHOENIX PROTOCOL ACTIVE.

Beneath it was an option she had never seen before.

SUCCESSOR AUTHORIZATION.

The system requested two biometric confirmations.

Claire placed her finger against the screen.

Then she handed the phone to Cassandra.

Her sister hesitated.

"What are you authorizing?"

"A new rule."

"What rule?"

Claire looked toward Gabriel.

"Phoenix cannot choose between us if we choose someone else."

Cassandra pressed her finger beside Claire's.

The system asked for the successor's identity.

Claire entered a name.

ETHAN LAWSON.

Marcus stared at her.

"You are giving Ethan control?"

"No."

She confirmed the transfer.

Across the country, Ethan screamed as every Phoenix-linked device in the mansion activated.

The system identified him as successor.

Then it began testing his eligibility.

Financial records opened.

Criminal files surfaced.

Private conversations played.

Every betrayal, theft, bribe, and conspiracy Ethan had committed was analyzed at once.

The system rejected him in less than four seconds.

SUCCESSOR UNFIT.

Claire smiled.

"Now it has encountered a contradiction."

The implant beneath Gabriel's ribs stopped flashing.

For the first time, the system did not know what to do.

Then the laboratory lost power.

The doors opened.

Claire disconnected her phone.

Gabriel collapsed.

Marcus checked his pulse.

"Alive."

Cassandra looked at Claire.

"You used Ethan as a virus."

"He has always been one."

...

They returned to Los Angeles under complete radio silence.

Ethan was held in a secure room beneath the mansion.

His hands were restrained to the table.

When Claire entered, he attempted to appear confident.

"You came back."

"Disappointed?"

"You need me."

Claire sat opposite him.

"I needed to understand why Vale chose you."

Ethan smiled.

"Maybe because I was smarter than you."

Claire placed a file on the table.

It contained records of every account he had lost.

"Your intelligence has cost you four billion dollars in less than two days."

His smile faded.

"What do you want?"

"Samuel Crowe."

"I've never met him."

Claire placed their marriage certificate beside the file.

"You met him at our wedding."

"An old judge signed a piece of paper."

"He witnessed more than our vows."

Ethan looked away.

Claire noticed.

"What did you give him?"

"Nothing."

She stood.

Ethan pulled against the restraints.

"Wait."

Claire stopped at the door.

Ethan's voice lowered.

"Vale gave me a package before the ceremony."

"What was inside?"

"I don't know. Crowe took it."

"What did it look like?"

"A small wooden box."

Claire returned to the table.

"Did it have a symbol?"

Ethan nodded.

"A black bird with its wings closed."

Not a rising Phoenix.

A sleeping one.

Claire had never seen that emblem.

"Where did Vale tell you the box came from?"

Ethan swallowed.

"Your mother's grave."

The lights flickered.

A voice came from the room's speaker.

It was a woman's voice.

Warm.

Familiar.

The same voice Claire remembered singing beside her bed.

May you like

"Claire," it said.

"Do not trust your father."
