Chapter 6 - What Ethan Hid Inside the Marriage

Ethan woke to find the mansion empty.
Claire was gone.
Emily was gone.
The staff had disappeared without explanation.
Even the security guards had abandoned their posts.
He walked through the silent hallway, calling their names.
No one answered.
In the kitchen, every screen suddenly turned on.
His company accounts appeared one after another.
Frozen.
Closed.
Transferred.
A message filled every display.
RETURN WHAT WAS NEVER YOURS.
Ethan threw a chair through the nearest screen.
His phone rang.
Adrian Vale's voice answered.
"You failed."
Ethan's anger vanished.
"You said the protocol would only frighten her."
"I said nothing of the kind."
"She destroyed everything."
"She removed what belonged to Phoenix."
"You promised me control."
Vale laughed softly.
"Men like you always confuse temporary access with ownership."
Ethan gripped the phone.
"I have the marriage certificate."
"Then you still possess something useful."
"What?"
"The witness signature."
Ethan frowned.
Claire and Ethan's marriage certificate had been signed by an elderly judge named Samuel Crowe. Ethan had never met him before the ceremony.
"What does Crowe have to do with this?"
"He was Gabriel Vance's legal custodian."
"Where is he?"
"Find him before Claire does."
The line disconnected.
...
Claire and Cassandra arrived in Los Angeles before sunrise.
Helen's body remained aboard Cassandra's aircraft for transport to a secure medical facility. The monitor had been deliberately disconnected. She was alive but unconscious.
Claire did not appreciate the deception.
Cassandra did not apologize.
"Vale monitors emergency medical networks," Cassandra explained. "A dead woman attracts less attention than a rescued witness."
They entered a safe house beneath an old theater.
Marcus Reed was waiting.
He aimed his gun at Cassandra.
She aimed hers at him.
Claire walked between them.
"Lower your weapons."
Marcus looked at Claire.
"Your authority is suspended."
"Then consider it a personal request."
Neither moved.
Claire pulled both weapons from their hands before either could react.
"Now we can talk."
Marcus stared at Cassandra.
"We searched for you for twenty-four years."
"No," Cassandra replied. "You searched for my body."
Claire placed the marriage certificate on the table.
"The red file is hidden inside my marriage."
Marcus studied the document.
"Samuel Crowe."
"You know him."
"He founded the legal structure Phoenix uses to conceal ownership."
Cassandra moved closer.
"Where is he?"
"Officially dead."
Claire looked at him.
"And unofficially?"
Marcus opened a map.
"There is an island off the Washington coast. No public records. No registered owner. Phoenix aircraft are prohibited from entering its airspace."
Claire understood.
"The only place Phoenix cannot search."
Marcus nodded.
"Gabriel called it Sanctuary."
They left within the hour.
When their aircraft approached the island, every navigation system failed simultaneously.
The pilot attempted to regain control.
A voice came through the radio.
"Turn back."
Claire took the microphone.
"My name is Claire Vance."
The voice remained silent for several seconds.
Then it answered.
"Claire Vance died thirty years ago."
Cassandra looked at her sister.
Claire replied calmly.
"Then perhaps you should meet her ghost."
The island's runway lights appeared.
They landed beneath heavy fog.
Samuel Crowe waited alone beside the runway.
He was over ninety years old and leaned on a wooden cane.
His eyes filled with recognition when he saw the sisters together.
"So," he whispered. "Both flames survived."
Claire handed him the marriage certificate.
"Where is the red file?"
Crowe turned away.
"It was never a file."
"What was it?"
"A legal weapon."
Inside the island compound, he led them into an underground archive.
Thousands of sealed cases lined the walls.
Crowe stopped before a red vault.
"Your marriage was not designed to protect Ethan."
He entered a code.
"It was designed to expose him."
The vault opened.
Inside was a single black envelope.
Claire removed it.
The document named her as the controlling beneficiary of every Lawson company, trust, property, and account established during the marriage.
But the final page contained something else.
A transfer executed one hour before Ethan attacked her.
All Phoenix assets had been moved to an unknown recipient.
The signature belonged to Claire.
She had never signed it.
Crowe looked terrified.
"That is impossible."
Cassandra examined the page.
"No."
She pointed to the fingerprint beside the signature.
"It is hers."
Claire studied the print.
Identical ridge pattern.
Identical scars.
Then she looked at Cassandra.
Her sister slowly raised both hands.
"I did not sign it."
An alarm sounded throughout the island.
Crowe looked toward the vault entrance.
"Someone used your identity to access Sanctuary."
Security footage appeared on a wall screen.
May you like
A woman walked through the compound wearing Claire's face.
She looked directly into the camera and smiled.
