Chapter 11 - The Woman Behind Every Memory

Claire dragged Emily behind the stone altar as another bullet struck the floor.
Cassandra fired toward the balcony.
The woman in the red scarf disappeared through a side door.
Marcus ran after her.
Claire pressed both hands against Emily's wound.
The bullet had passed through her side.
"Stay awake."
Emily struggled to breathe.
"I didn't know what I was."
"You can explain later."
"She'll erase me."
"Not while I'm here."
Emily gave a weak smile.
"That is what you said when we were ten."
Claire looked at her.
"We met when we were fourteen."
Emily's expression changed.
"No."
Her eyes closed.
Claire remembered nothing before fourteen.
Yet somewhere beneath the constructed memories, something moved.
A playground.
A frightened girl behind a fence.
Claire reaching through the bars.
A promise.
I won't let them take you again.
Marcus returned alone.
"The shooter knew the building. She triggered a tunnel collapse behind her."
Cassandra knelt beside Emily.
"Medical extraction is coming."
Claire looked toward the balcony.
"No. She wanted us to find this place."
"Why?"
"To wake Emily's memories."
"And shoot her?"
"The wound was survivable."
Marcus understood.
"Another controlled message."
They searched the chapel.
Behind the altar was a hidden door leading to an underground theater.
A projector turned on automatically.
Home videos appeared on the screen.
Claire at six years old.
Emily beside her.
Cassandra behind a glass wall.
Helen speaking to a group of doctors.
Gabriel arguing with Adrian Vale.
Then the woman Claire remembered as her mother entered the frame.
She removed the red scarf.
A technician peeled artificial skin from her face.
Beneath it was another woman entirely.
Claire's childhood mother had been a Mirror operative.
The real woman had never existed.
The projector played a recording dated twenty-two years earlier.
Gabriel stood alone before the camera.
"If Claire sees this, then Phoenix has already begun the final succession."
He looked exhausted.
"I could not save both girls at once. I chose Claire because the Council believed she was weaker. Cassandra had already adapted to the program. Claire still possessed empathy."
Cassandra watched without expression.
Gabriel continued.
"I believed empathy would destroy Phoenix from within."
Claire felt Cassandra's eyes on her.
"I returned for Cassandra," Gabriel said. "But Vale moved her before I arrived. For that failure, I deserve her hatred."
Cassandra looked away.
The recording shifted.
"The woman Claire knows as her mother was called Evelyn Shaw. She began as a Mirror operative, but she betrayed the program. She loved Claire as her own child."
Claire's throat tightened.
"Evelyn is alive," Gabriel said. "But she is no longer the woman Claire remembers."
A final image appeared.
Evelyn sat inside a medical chamber surrounded by wires.
Her face had been altered repeatedly.
Her memories had been copied.
Her voice had been recorded.
"Phoenix uses her to control Claire."
The recording ended.
Cassandra broke the silence.
"The shooter could be Evelyn."
Claire shook her head.
"Or anyone wearing her face."
A panel opened beneath the projector.
Inside was the small wooden box Ethan had described.
The black bird with closed wings was carved into its lid.
Claire opened it.
There was no file inside.
Only a key.
And a message written in Gabriel's handwriting.
THE RED FILE IS A PERSON.
Claire looked toward Emily as medics carried her into the corridor.
Cassandra followed her gaze.
"Emily?"
"No."
Claire turned the key over.
A name was engraved on its edge.
CLAIRE.
The lights in the theater turned red.
A hidden door opened.
Behind it was a glass chamber.

Inside sat a little girl, no older than eight.
She had Claire's face.
