Chapter 14 - The House Beneath the Lake

Red had left no physical trail.
But she had opened a Phoenix satellite connection for three seconds before disappearing.
Marcus traced it to a mountain lake in Oregon.
The lake did not appear on modern maps.
Older military records identified a research facility beneath the water.
Claire, Cassandra, and Marcus traveled there by helicopter.
Gabriel came with them despite his injuries.
He had refused to remain in Sanctuary.
"If Evelyn is there, she may recognize me."
Claire looked at him.
"Or kill you."
"She would have reason."
They reached the lake at dusk.
A small house stood alone beside the water.
Smoke rose from its chimney.
Claire approached the front door.
A woman's voice came from inside.
"You took longer than I expected."
The door opened.
A woman in her late fifties stood before them.
Her face was unfamiliar.
But she wore a red scarf.
Gabriel whispered, "Evelyn."
The woman's eyes moved to him.
She slapped him so hard he nearly fell.
"That was for leaving Cassandra."
Then she embraced him.
Claire watched in silence.
Evelyn turned toward her.
"My little star."
Claire's emotions remained locked behind years of training.
"You wore another face when you raised me."
"Many faces."
"Which one is real?"
Evelyn smiled sadly.
"I no longer remember."
Inside the house, Red sat beside the fire drinking tea.
She looked like an ordinary child.
Cassandra remained near the door.
"Why bring us here?"
Red answered.
"Because Phoenix cannot see beneath the lake."
A hidden elevator carried them underground.
The facility below was older than Dock 17 and larger than Sanctuary.
Thousands of paper files filled climate-controlled rooms.
No networked machines.
No cameras.
No wireless signals.
The information had been preserved beyond Phoenix's reach.
Evelyn led them into a circular chamber.
At its center stood a red filing cabinet.
"The original archive," she said.
Claire opened the first drawer.
It contained records from Project Phoenix before the intelligence system existed.
The founders had not intended to create a global defense network.
They had intended to create a mechanism for controlling wealth after death.
Every major Phoenix asset was connected to hereditary identity markers.
Children had been taken, duplicated, trained, and replaced to ensure that selected bloodlines remained under control.
Claire found the Vance family record.
Gabriel was listed as Guardian.
Vale was listed as Architect.
Evelyn was listed as Mother.
Claire and Cassandra were listed as Keys.
Red was listed as Lock.
"What does the lock protect?" Claire asked.
Evelyn pointed toward the deepest level of the facility.
"The inheritance."
They descended.
Behind a steel door was a vault containing no gold, money, or documents.
Only a black server.
Gabriel stared at it.
"I destroyed this."
"No," Evelyn said. "You destroyed a copy."
Red approached the server.
"This is where Phoenix was born."
Claire looked at the child.
"You brought us here to destroy it."
Red shook her head.
"To open it."
Cassandra stepped between Red and the server.
"Why?"
"Because Mother is inside."
Evelyn's face tightened.
"I am here."
Red looked at her.
"Not you."
The server activated without being touched.
A holographic image appeared above it.
A woman lay inside a medical chamber.
Claire recognized her from the infant photograph.
The woman who had given birth to Claire and Cassandra.
Their biological mother.
Status indicators showed she was still alive.
Her location appeared on the screen.
LAWSON MEDICAL FOUNDATION.
Ethan's family had controlled the facility for thirty years.
Gabriel looked at Claire.
"That is why Vale chose Ethan."
The screen changed.
A live image appeared.
Victoria Lawson stood beside the chamber.
Ethan's mother smiled into the camera.
"Claire," she said, "you took my son's empire."
May you like
She placed one hand on the chamber's power control.
"So I think I will take your mother."
