Chapter 12 - The Child With Claire's Face

The little girl opened her eyes.

Claire approached the chamber slowly.

The child wore a white dress. Sensors covered her temples and wrists. A breathing tube ran beneath her nose.

"How long has she been here?" Marcus asked.

Cassandra inspected the medical display.

"According to this, twenty-seven years."

"That is impossible," Marcus said. "She hasn't aged."

Claire looked at the fluid circulating through the chamber.

"Suspended development."

The child's eyes followed her.

Then she lifted one hand and pressed it against the glass.

Claire did the same.

A speaker crackled.

"Are you me?" the child asked.

Claire felt something inside her fracture.

"No."

The girl looked disappointed.

"They said I would become you."

"Who said that?"

"Father."

"Gabriel?"

The child shook her head.

"Dr. Vale."

Cassandra found a release mechanism.

Claire stopped her.

"We don't know what will happen if the chamber opens."

The girl heard her.

"I'll die."

Claire looked at her.

"Why?"

"The machine is my heart."

The girl's voice was calm, as if she had repeated the words many times.

"My name is Red."

The red file was a person.

Not paper.

Not evidence.

A child.

Claire examined the terminal beside the chamber.

Red's brain activity had been connected to Phoenix networks for decades. Her neural patterns trained the system to predict fear, loyalty, betrayal, and obedience.

She was not simply part of Phoenix.

She was its emotional core.

Cassandra stared at the data.

"They kept her as a child so the system would always think like one."

"A frightened child," Claire said.

A new message appeared.

AUTHORIZED GUARDIAN DETECTED.

The terminal requested the key.

Claire inserted the key from the wooden box.

A video opened.

Adrian Vale appeared.

"If you are watching this, Claire, then you have finally met the sister no one told you about."

Cassandra stepped forward angrily.

"Another sister?"

Vale smiled in the recording.

"Not biologically. Red was created from combined neural maps taken from Claire and Cassandra during infancy."

Claire looked at the child.

Vale continued.

"She carries what both of you lost. Claire's aggression. Cassandra's compassion."

Cassandra almost laughed.

"They reversed us."

"No," Vale said as if answering her. "They balanced you."

The recording ended with instructions.

To free Red, Phoenix required one guardian to surrender all command authority permanently.

Claire reached for the authorization control.

Cassandra grabbed her wrist.

"No."

"She has been trapped for twenty-seven years."

"That is exactly why we should distrust the obvious solution."

The little girl watched them through the glass.

"You always fight," she whispered.

Claire and Cassandra looked at her.

Red touched the sensors on her head.

"I hear both of you when you dream."

The sisters froze.

Red smiled sadly.

"I heard the bedroom."

Claire remembered the moment she activated the protocol.

"Did you send the message?"

"Thank you, Claire?"

"Yes."

Red nodded.

"I was lonely."

The building shook.

Explosions sounded above.

Vale's forces had entered the hospital.

Marcus raised his weapon.

"We need to move."

Claire looked at the guardian controls.

Cassandra stood beside her.

"You surrender authority, Phoenix may become uncontrolled."

"She is not Phoenix."

"How do you know?"

Red answered for her.

"Because Phoenix is afraid of me."

The chamber alarms began sounding.

A countdown appeared.

EMERGENCY TERMINATION: FIVE MINUTES.

Vale was destroying the evidence.

Claire inserted her hand into the guardian scanner.

Cassandra cursed and placed her hand beside it.

The system rejected two guardians.

ONE MUST CHOOSE.

Claire and Cassandra looked at each other.

For the first time, neither argued.

Cassandra withdrew her hand.

Claire completed the authorization.

COMMAND AUTHORITY SURRENDERED.

The chamber opened.

Claire caught Red as she fell forward.

Across every screen, the Phoenix emblem split down the middle.

Then all the lights went out.

May you like

In the darkness, Red whispered into Claire's ear.

"You shouldn't have freed me."
