Chapter 15 - The Phoenix Behind the Throne

The Lawson Medical Foundation stood twenty floors above downtown Los Angeles.

Publicly, it was a charitable institution specializing in neurological disease.

Privately, three underground levels had never appeared on any city plans.

Claire watched the live feed of Victoria beside her mother's chamber.

A countdown appeared on the screen.

Two hours.

Victoria had connected the life-support controls to a dead-man trigger. Any attempt to break into the facility would terminate the patient.

Ethan was brought from federal custody under emergency authorization.

His face changed when he saw his mother on the screen.

"She was involved?"

Claire studied him.

"You didn't know."

"No."

For once, his shock appeared genuine.

Victoria spoke through the live connection.

"My son was always too sentimental."

Ethan stepped toward the screen.

"Mother, what have you done?"

"What your father was too weak to finish."

Claire turned.

"Ethan's father died twelve years ago."

Victoria smiled.

"The man buried under my husband's name died twelve years ago."

Claire felt Gabriel tense beside her.

The pattern repeated.

False deaths.

Replacement identities.

Buried names.

Victoria continued.

"The real Henry Lawson helped build Project Mirror. He understood that the world's most powerful families could survive forever if faces became disposable."

Cassandra moved toward the controls.

"She is delaying us."

Red stood beside her.

"No. She wants Claire to ask the question."

Claire looked at Victoria.

"What question?"

Victoria's smile widened.

"Why did Ethan choose Emily?"

Ethan looked confused.

Claire remained silent.

"Emily was not merely trained to replace you," Victoria said. "She was legally registered as Claire Vance before either of you entered school."

Marcus opened the recovered documents.

The records confirmed it.

For eighteen years, Emily had possessed Claire's original birth identity.

The woman standing beside Ethan during the affair had been, on paper, the true Claire Vance.

Victoria continued.

"Your marriage to Ethan was never legally valid."

Ethan stared at Claire.

"What?"

"You did not marry Claire Vance," Victoria said. "You married a nameless replacement."

Claire looked at Gabriel.

He could not meet her eyes.

"You knew."

"I knew the records had been altered," he said. "I did not know Emily held the identity."

Victoria raised a document.

"Every asset activated by the marriage belongs to the legal Claire Vance."

Emily.

The Phoenix Protocol had not transferred the empire to an unknown recipient.

It had transferred everything to the identity registered under Claire's name.

And Emily possessed that identity.

Claire thought of the false signature and matching fingerprint.

Project Mirror had trained Emily to replicate her completely.

"Where is Emily?" Claire asked.

Marcus checked the mansion's secure medical wing.

Her room was empty.

Again.

A new connection opened on the screen.

Emily appeared inside Phoenix headquarters in Nevada.

Her wound had been bandaged.

Council members stood behind her.

Samuel Crowe was among them.

So was Adrian Vale.

Marcus stared at the image.

"Crowe betrayed us."

Gabriel shook his head.

"No. Look at his hand."

Crowe's fingers trembled in a repeated pattern.

A coded message.

THREE FACES. ONE ENEMY.

Emily looked into the camera.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Claire, I am sorry."

Vale stood behind her.

"Proceed."

Emily placed her hand against the Phoenix command panel.

The system accepted her as Claire Vance.

Every financial asset, security division, intelligence archive, and satellite network came under her authority.

Victoria touched the switch beside the medical chamber.

"Your mother lives only while Emily obeys."

Claire looked from Victoria to Vale.

Two apparent enemies working together.

A third force remained hidden.

Three faces.

One enemy.

Red suddenly grabbed Claire's hand.

"The woman in the chamber is not your mother."

Everyone turned toward her.

Claire's voice became dangerously quiet.

"How do you know?"

"Because I can hear her thoughts."

"And?"

Red looked terrified.

"She is awake."

On the screen, the woman inside the chamber opened her eyes.

All the monitors around her shut down.

Yet she continued breathing.

Victoria stepped back.

The chamber glass cracked from the inside.

Claire's biological mother raised one hand.

The entire Lawson Foundation lost power.

Vale's expression changed for the first time.

Fear.

The chamber shattered.

The woman stepped onto the floor after thirty years of confinement.

She looked directly at the hidden camera.

Then she spoke in a voice that caused every Phoenix system in the world to respond.

"Protocol Genesis."

Red screamed.

The Phoenix emblem vanished from every screen.

It was replaced by a black bird with closed wings.

The same symbol from the wooden box.

Gabriel whispered, "That protocol was never supposed to exist."

Claire looked at him.

"What does it do?"

Before he could answer, the underground facility began shaking.

The red filing cabinets opened by themselves.

Inside every drawer, documents began burning without flame.

The black server displayed one final message.

PHOENIX WAS ONLY THE FIRST CHILD.

ORIGIN HAS AWAKENED.

Across the live feed, Emily broke free from Vale and reached the command panel.

"Claire, listen to me."

Vale's guards seized her.

Emily screamed over them.

"Your mother isn't the prisoner!"

The transmission began breaking apart.

Claire stepped closer to the screen.

"Then who is she?"

Emily looked directly into her eyes.

"The person who created all of us."

The connection died.

A heavy door opened at the deepest end of the lake facility.

Cold air rolled from the darkness.

Footsteps approached.

Slow.

Calm.

Familiar.

A man emerged carrying the red file Claire had searched for since the night Ethan betrayed her.

Claire stared at his face.

It was Ethan.

But the real Ethan was standing only a few feet behind her.

The second Ethan smiled.

"Hello, Claire."

He placed the file on the table.

May you like

"You destroyed the wrong husband."

CUT TO BLACK.
