Chapter 2 - The Secret Beneath Dock 17

Rain fell like silver needles over the abandoned harbor.
At 1:12 in the morning, Claire parked her car three streets away from Dock 17 and completed the rest of the journey on foot.
She wore black trousers, a waterproof jacket, and shoes with soles designed to leave almost no visible prints. Her hair was tied tightly behind her head. The injured woman who had once appeared helpless beside a marble nightstand was gone.
Tonight, Claire moved like the woman she had spent six years pretending not to be.
The warehouse stood at the edge of the water, its rusted walls trembling beneath the wind. Every window was dark.
Yet Claire counted four security cameras before she reached the fence.
They were new.
Someone was still using the building.
She touched the device hidden inside her sleeve. The cameras froze, repeating the same four seconds of empty footage.
Claire climbed the fence and landed silently on the other side.
A faint light flickered beneath the warehouse door.
She entered through a broken side window.
Inside, rows of shipping containers formed narrow corridors. Most were covered in dust, but one path had recently been cleared. Claire followed it until she reached a metal staircase leading below ground.
The architectural plans had shown no basement.
She descended.
At the bottom, she found a steel door protected by a biometric scanner. There was no handle.
Claire pressed a thin transparent film against the scanner. A stolen fingerprint pattern flashed across its surface.
The door unlocked.
Beyond it was not a storage room.
It was a command center.
Computer screens covered the walls. Photographs, financial records, and surveillance reports were pinned across several boards.
Claire moved closer.
Her own face stared back at her.
There were photographs from her wedding.
Her father's funeral.
Her meetings in Nevada.
Even images taken inside her bedroom.
She found a file labeled C. VANCE.
Claire opened it.
The first page described her education, physical training, medical history, psychological evaluations, and operational authority.
The final line made her blood run cold.
PHOENIX SUCCESSION CANDIDATE: TERMINATION AUTHORIZED.
Footsteps sounded above her.
Claire closed the file and disappeared behind a bank of servers.
Two men entered.
The first was tall and heavily built. The second wore a gray suit and carried an umbrella, although they were underground.
"The Lawson subject activated the protocol earlier than expected," the tall man said.
The man in gray remained calm.
"It doesn't matter. Ethan completed his purpose."
"And Claire?"
"She still believes Phoenix belongs to her."
The tall man laughed quietly.
"When do we tell her?"
"We don't."
The man in gray walked toward Claire's file.
"We let her destroy Ethan. Then we remove what remains."
Claire's fingers tightened around the knife hidden in her sleeve.
The man in gray opened the file.
He paused.
One page was slightly out of alignment.
His eyes narrowed.
"We're not alone."
The lights went out.
Claire moved instantly.
She struck the taller man behind the knee, seized his wrist, and slammed his head into a server. The man in gray fired twice into the darkness.
Claire rolled behind a desk as sparks exploded from the wall.
Emergency lights flashed red.
The tall man lunged toward her. Claire twisted his arm until the pistol fell from his hand, then drove him into the floor.
The man in gray escaped through the steel door.
Claire chased him up the staircase and into the warehouse.
By the time she reached the loading area, a black speedboat was already cutting across the harbor.
The man stood at the back, watching her.
Lightning illuminated his face.
Claire stopped breathing.
She knew him.
Dr. Adrian Vale.
The physician who had signed her father's death certificate.
The man who had personally told Claire that nothing could have saved him.
Vale raised one hand in farewell.
Then the boat disappeared into the rain.
Behind Claire, the wounded guard groaned.
She returned to the underground room and pulled him upright.
"Who does Vale work for?"
The man laughed through bloodied teeth.
"You really don't know, do you?"
Claire pressed the stolen pistol beneath his jaw.
"Know what?"
"Phoenix didn't choose you."
His smile widened.
"It created you."
Before Claire could ask another question, a small light began blinking beneath his collar.
She tore open his shirt.
An implanted device flashed rapidly.
Claire threw herself behind a concrete pillar.
The explosion ripped through the basement.
Flames climbed the walls. Files, photographs, and computers vanished in a wave of heat.
Claire escaped through the side window seconds before the warehouse roof collapsed.
Standing in the rain, she looked down at the single page she had managed to save.
Most of it was burned.
Only one sentence remained readable.
SUBJECT'S MOTHER REMAINS UNAWARE THAT THE ORIGINAL CHILD DIED.
Claire stared at the words until the paper shook in her hand.
May you like
Her mother had died when Claire was eight.
At least, that was what she had always been told.
