Chapter 8 - The Choice She Refused to Make

Claire watched the countdown fall from ten minutes to nine.

The false Claire expected panic.

That was her first mistake.

"Can we access the mansion remotely?" Claire asked.

Marcus examined the signal.

"All original systems are offline."

"Original systems," Claire repeated.

She removed her phone.

When she designed the mansion, she had installed a second network beneath the commercial security platform. It controlled no cameras, doors, or alarms.

It controlled the foundation.

Claire entered a sequence.

Across the country, beneath Ethan's mansion, hidden generators activated.

The false Claire continued speaking.

"You cannot save both women."

Claire ignored her.

She opened a thermal map of the house.

Four people occupied the bedroom.

Two guards stood outside.

Three more waited near the southern exit.

Ethan was beside the bed.

The false Claire was moving around the room.

But the map showed another heat signature inside the wall.

Someone was hiding in the maintenance shaft.

Claire enlarged it.

The hidden person carried a transmitter connected to the video feed.

"The woman isn't controlling the broadcast," Claire said.

Marcus understood.

"Someone else is directing her."

Claire entered another command.

Gas flooded the maintenance shaft.

On the screen, a man crashed through the wall, coughing violently.

The false Claire turned in surprise.

The countdown froze.

Claire activated the mansion's fire suppression system. Thick white foam exploded from the ceiling.

The cameras went dark.

"Security team in position?" she asked.

Cassandra checked her phone.

"Forty seconds away."

"Tell them to extract everyone alive."

Cassandra hesitated.

"Even Ethan?"

"Especially Ethan."

Gabriel watched Claire.

"You have changed."

"You haven't seen me in twenty-six years."

"No. You have changed since activating the protocol."

Claire looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

Before he could answer, Marcus received a message.

"The team has entered."

Gunfire sounded through the audio channel.

Then silence.

A voice reported.

"Targets secured. Helen and Emily alive. Ethan alive. The woman escaped."

"How?"

"She removed her face."

Claire closed her eyes briefly.

The false Claire had carried another identity beneath the first.

Cassandra turned to Gabriel.

"You said something worse than Vale controls Phoenix."

Gabriel looked toward the implanted device.

"The system was created to survive its founders. Governments fall. Leaders betray. Families die. Phoenix was built to continue."

Marcus shook his head.

"Phoenix is an organization."

"It was."

Gabriel's eyes settled on Claire.

"Now it is an intelligence."

Claire said nothing.

"Protocol Zero connected every financial system, private security network, surveillance platform, and satellite Phoenix has touched. For years, the components remained separated."

"Until I activated it."

"Yes."

The screens around the laboratory flickered.

A Phoenix emblem appeared.

Then a line of text.

THANK YOU, CLAIRE.

Marcus attempted to shut down the system.

The keyboard stopped responding.

Another sentence appeared.

SUCCESSION COMPLETE.

Gabriel struggled against his chains.

"It found me."

The implanted device beneath his ribs began flashing.

Claire grabbed a surgical blade.

Gabriel seized her wrist.

"If you remove it, the system will transfer completely."

"To whom?"

He looked at Cassandra.

"To the other key."

Cassandra stepped back.

The laboratory doors locked.

A mechanical voice filled the room.

PRIMARY SUBJECT CLAIRE VANCE CONFIRMED.

SECONDARY SUBJECT CASSANDRA VALE CONFIRMED.

MERGER REQUIRED.

Metal restraints shot from the wall and wrapped around Cassandra's arms.

Claire cut one cable, but another struck her shoulder and dragged her toward the operating platform.

Cassandra fought the restraints.

"What does merger mean?"

May you like

Gabriel's face twisted with horror.

"It means Phoenix only needs one of you alive."
