Chapter 8 - The Person from Mercer House
Daniel arrived that afternoon.
He brought news.
“We found Emily.”
Claire stood immediately.
“Where?”
“Providence.”
“Is she safe?”
“Yes.”
“Will she talk?”
Daniel nodded.
“She already did.”
He opened his case.
Inside was a small recording device.
Claire stared at it.
“What’s on there?”
“Evan’s voice.”
Claire remained silent.
Daniel pressed play.
Evan’s voice filled the room.
“If Claire refuses to sign, Vanessa will handle it.”
Claire’s face remained still.
Another voice followed.
Vanessa.
“And if she finds out?”
“She won't.”
Claire looked at Daniel.
“What were they planning?”
Daniel stopped the recording.
“That’s what we still don't know.”
He placed a second file on the table.
“There's another problem.”
“What?”
“Someone inside Mercer House has been sending information to a third party.”
“Who?”
“We haven't identified them.”
Claire looked toward the window.
“So someone is helping Evan.”
Daniel nodded.
“Or someone is helping us.”
