Chapter 11 - The Woman Evan Never Suspected
Vanessa denied everything.
Evan demanded answers.
Claire remained silent.
Daniel watched them both.
Eventually, Vanessa turned toward Claire.
“You knew.”
Claire did not answer.
“You knew about the transfers.”
Still nothing.
“You knew about the account.”
Claire lifted her glass.
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“Then why did you let him believe you were helpless?”
Claire finally looked at her.
“Because he needed to believe it.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You think you won?”
“No.”
Claire placed her glass down.
“I think none of us knows who won yet.”
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
A sound came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Someone was walking down the staircase.
Evan turned.
“Who is that?”
Claire stared toward the stairs.
Her face changed.
Daniel immediately stood.
“Claire?”
She whispered one name.
“Emily.”
A woman appeared at the bottom of the staircase.
Emily Harper looked exhausted.
But she was holding a thick black folder.
She looked directly at Evan.
