Chapter 12 - The Black Folder
Emily placed the folder on the table.
“I kept copies.”
Evan stared at her.
“You stole company property.”
“No.”
Emily opened the folder.
“You told me to destroy the originals.”
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
“What originals?”
Emily looked at her.
“The original trust documents.”
Silence.
Daniel immediately reached for the folder.
Emily pulled it away.
“Not yet.”
Daniel stopped.
Emily looked around the room.
“I didn't know who to trust.”
Claire asked quietly.
“Why trust me now?”
Emily's eyes filled with exhaustion.
“Because Evan told me you were already finished.”
Claire stared at her.
“And?”
Emily smiled sadly.
“I realized he was wrong.”
She opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Contracts.
Bank records.
Emails.
And one photograph that made Claire stop.
It showed Evan meeting someone outside a private office.
Claire recognized the man.
She had seen him before.
At their wedding.
At family events.
At Mercer House.
Her face went pale.
“Who is that?”
Emily looked at her.
“You don't know?”
Claire shook her head.
Daniel stared at the photograph.
