Chapter 3 - The Name Behind Mercer House

Mercer House had always been Evan’s greatest pride.
He told everyone it was his company.
He told investors he had built it from nothing.
He told Claire the same story.
But Claire remembered something he had forgotten.
The first investment had not come from Evan.
It had come from her grandfather.
Years before Claire met Evan, her family had established a private trust.
When Claire married Evan, part of that trust had been placed into an investment structure.
Evan had used that money to launch Mercer House.
But there was one condition.
The controlling interest could never be transferred without Claire’s written approval.
Evan had never read the entire agreement.
He had signed the documents his lawyers placed in front of him.
Claire had.
Twice.
Daniel had reviewed them again.
Three weeks later, Daniel called.
“I found something.”
Claire sat in her study.
“What?”
“Evan has been trying to transfer controlling shares.”
“To Vanessa?”
“Not directly.”
Claire frowned.
“Then who?”
Daniel paused.
“A shell company.”
“Whose?”
“That’s the problem.”
Claire waited.
“We don’t know yet.”
She looked toward the window.
Rain streaked the glass.
“Find out.”
“I already started.”
“And Daniel?”
“Yes?”
“If he thinks he can take everything from me…”
May you like
Claire’s voice remained quiet.
“Let him keep thinking that.”
