Chapter 13 - The Man Behind the Door

The man in the photograph was Thomas Mercer.
Evan’s father.
But Thomas had supposedly been dead for six years.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“Explain.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I can't.”
Evan suddenly laughed.
It was a nervous laugh.
“You're all losing your minds.”
Emily turned toward him.
“I saw him.”
“No.”
“I spoke to him.”
“No.”
“He gave me the documents.”
Evan stepped backward.
Claire stared at him.
“Your father is alive?”
Evan said nothing.
That silence was enough.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“We need to leave.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
“Claire.”
“I’m not running.”
She looked at Evan.
“You knew.”
He finally exploded.
“You don't understand anything!”
“Then explain it.”
“You think this is about money?”
Claire said nothing.
Evan’s face was full of anger and fear.
“It was never about the house.”
“Then what was it about?”
He stared at her.
For several seconds, he couldn't answer.
Then someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone turned.

Evan whispered:
“He found us.”
