Chapter 10 - Three Envelopes
Evan demanded to see them.
Daniel refused.
“Not until everyone leaves.”
“This is my house.”
Claire corrected him.
“Our house.”
Evan looked at her.
“Not for long.”
Daniel opened his case.
Three envelopes.
One was marked PROPERTY.
One was marked MERCER HOUSE.
The final one had no label.
Evan stared at it.
“What’s in the third?”
“You'll find out.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Evan, we should leave.”
He looked at her.
“You knew about this?”
“No.”
She sounded sincere.
Claire watched her carefully.
There was fear in Vanessa’s eyes.
Not fear of Claire.
Fear of someone else.
Claire noticed.
So did Daniel.
The executives left.
The dining room became silent.
Evan remained standing.
“Open them.”
Daniel pushed the first envelope forward.
Evan opened it.
His expression changed.
“This can't be real.”
Claire said nothing.
He opened the second.
His hand began to shake.
Then he opened the third.
He stopped breathing for a moment.
“What is this?”
Daniel looked at Claire.
Claire looked back.
“Keep reading.”
Evan read the final page.
Then slowly looked toward Vanessa.
“What did you do?”
Vanessa stepped backward.
“I didn't do anything.”
